M-SJHS baseball bounces back after loss to defeat St. Joseph

Mahomet-Seymour’s junior high baseball team followed up a shutout loss to Champaign Edison with a two-run victory at St. Joseph.

M-S topped St. Joseph, 10-8, on Wednesday (Aug. 24), a day after losing to Champaign Edison at home, 14-0, on Tuesday (Aug. 23).

Bradley Jones collected two hits and three RBI against St. Joseph. Dyllin Thomas scored three runs and knocked in two.

The pitching duties were shared by Paxson O’Malley and Marco Casillas.

O’Malley threw the first four innings. He walked one and struck out five. Casillas pitched the last three innings, walking two and fanning three.

He picked up the win after the Bulldogs used a five-run sixth inning to rally for the win.

Against Edison, M-S was held hitless. Sharing the pitching chores were Jones, Camden Beedy and Aiden Banister.

On Saturday (Aug. 27), the Bulldogs handed visiting Bloomington a 13-3, five-inning loss.

Slayton Deck threw a complete game, yielding six hits, walking one and striking out five.

Thomas was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Casillas was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Logan Schmit tallied three runs and had two RBI. Jones scored twice and knocked in two runs.

In the junior varsity game, M-S thumped Bloomington, 17-2.

On Tuesday (Aug. 30), the Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Tolono Unity, 6-5.

Casillas’ second hit of the game drove in Joseph Roller with the tying run.

M-S loaded the bases when Schmit singled and Thomas was given an intentional walk. Parker Henry foiled that strategy, crushing a ball into deep center field that served as the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Jones joined Casillas with two hits in the game. Thomas and Ben Ohms each stole two bases.

O’Malley pitched the first four innings, walking two and striking out one. Ethan Kempher threw two-hit ball over the final three innings, walking no one and fanning two.

M-S (6-2) returns to action on Wednesday (Aug. 31) at home against Champaign St. Matthew.
