Irwin’s Double Wins Propel Mahomet-Seymour to Strong Finish at Metamora Track Meet

Senior Jayvon Irwin won two individual events and was part of a first-place relay on Friday (April 19) at the Metamora A-B-C boys’ track and field meet.

Irwin was the meet’s dominant sprinter. He took top honors in the 100 meters (11.34 seconds) and set a new personal-best while winning the 200 meters (22.74 seconds).

Irwin was competing in Class A.

He was also part of a 400-meter relay unit that included Travis Hoffman, Ryken Kirby and Alex O’Brian that was triumphant in 44.04 seconds.

The Bulldog had two runner-up placers in the Class A division.

Henry McMurry was second in the 1,600 meters (personal-best 4:43.59) and Kirby took second in the long jump (20 feet, 7 inches).

M-S also had two third-place finishes and one fourth-place finisher in Class A events.

DeAngelo Hughey was third in the 400 meters (53.28 seconds) and Lukas Nykaza was third in the 3,200 meters (personal-best 10:27.78).

Taking fourth was 110-meter hurdler Hoffman (17.18 seconds).

Other Bulldogs with top 10 performances in Class A were: Ethan Ramirez (fifth in the 800 meters, personal-best 2:05.50), Seth Christiansen (tied for fifth in the pole vault at 10 feet, 5 inches), Trevor Reeves (seventh in the discus at 126 feet, 1 inch), Camden Snodsmith (seventh in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches), Hoffman (eighth in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:00.42) and Reeves (ninth in the shot put at 41 feet, 7 inches).

Two Bulldog relays fared well in Class A.

The 3,200-meter unit of Auggie Gaudio, Tate Bode, Kaden Jackson and Grant Smysor was fourth in 8:52.25.

The 1,600-meter relay featured Hughey, Hoffman, O’Brian and Ramirez. They were timed in 3:51.34 and wound up in eighth place.

Metamora took team honors in Class A with 91 points. M-S was second with 69 points.

In Class B, Galesburg won with 74 ½ points and M-S was 12th with 18 points.

Carson Drinkwalter, Dylan Smith, Luke Johnson and Kaleb Kasper were the top M-S individuals in Class B.

Drinkwalter captured third in the pole vault (10 feet). Smith wound up fourth in both sprint races (12.08 in the 100 meters and personal-best 24.52 in the 200 meters) while long jumper Luke Johnson was also fourth (18 feet, 2 inches).

Kasper placed fourth in the 1,600 meters (personal-best 4:46.08).

Other M-S individual placers in Class B were: Gavin Fan (seventh in the 3,200 meters in 11:34.35), Landen McConkey (eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best 20.91 and ninth in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 50.32 seconds), Austin Crull (ninth in the shot put at 37 feet, 10 inches) and Lars Kellner (11th in the discus at 83 feet, 9 inches).

Additionally, the 1,600-meter relay grouping of Gaudio, Bode, Jackson and Smysor ended second in 3:44.30.

In Class C, Galesburg was first with 38 points. M-S was 12th with seven points.

The leading M-S participants in Class C were Jackson Davis, Zachary Wilcoski and Jaxon Themanson.

Davis was the runner-up in the pole vault (10 feet).

Wilcoski placed third in the 1,600 meters (personal-best 4:52.03) and Themanson was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (personal-best 21.62 seconds).

Themanson was also 10th in the 300-meter hurdles (52.89 seconds).

Other Bulldogs among the top 10 in Class C were Brock Kellenberger (seventh in the 100 meters in 12.41 seconds), Crull (seventh in the discus at 101 feet, 4 inches), Kellner (ninth in the shot put at 33 feet, 9 inches) and McConkey (11th in the long jump with a personal-best 13 feet, 7 inches).

M-S will return to action on Friday (April 26) at the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartan Classic.

On Saturday (April 20), M-S placed third in the eight-school Monticello Freshmen-Sophomore Invitational.

The Bulldogs had individual winners in three events.

Freshman Steffen Kellner was the top sprinter, winning the 100 meters in a personal-best 11.86 seconds and following up with a win in the 200 meters (personal-best 24.63 seconds).

Sophomore Jackson Davis was triumphant in the pole vault (personal-best 10 feet, 5 inches).

Corban McMinn was the runner-up in the 1,600 meters (personal-best 5:05.88).

Placing third for M-S were two field-event performers. Oliver Smith was third in the shot put (37 feet) and Arthur Hofbauer tied for third in the pole vault (personal-best 7 feet, 5 inches).

Capturing fourth place for the Bulldogs individually were Ben Schultz (1,600 meters in 5:12.26) and Cash Bryan (110-meter hurdles in a personal-best 19.19 seconds).

Smith also added a fifth-place finish in the discus (personal-best 103 feet, 6 inches).

Finishing in sixth for M-S were Tristan Nilson (100 meters in a personal-best 12.51 seconds), Henry Carpenter (400 meters in a personal-best 1:00.22), Jackson Koontz (800 meters in a personal-best 2:30.37), Bryan (300 hurdles in 49.87 seconds), Xander Shanks (high jump at 4 feet, 7 inches) and C.J. Smith (triple jump at a personal-best 30 feet).

Nilson was seventh in the 200 meters (26.22 seconds), Blake Patrick was seventh in the 800 meters (personal-best 2:30.78) and Robert Bonham was seventh in the triple jump (personal-best 29 feet, 9 inches).

Smith was eighth in the long jump (15 feet, 8 inches) and Amann Kohli was eighth in the shot put (30 feet, 5 inches).

The Bulldogs’ 400-meter relay grabbed a second-place finish in 47.34 seconds. Sharing the baton were Nilson, Parker Wilkins, Carpenter and Kellner.
