Singer, Scheele, Eckley win events at Mount Zion

Three Mahomet-Seymour athletes were individual winners on Tuesday (Feb. 22) in a non-scored boys’ track and field indoor mini meet at Mount Zion.

Jonah Singer led a 1-2 Bulldog finish in the 800 meters. He was timed in 2 minutes, 4.90 seconds. Teammate Joseph Scheele was the runner-up (2:07.63) and a third M-S runner, John Eckley, took fourth in 2:18.17.

All three are seniors.

In the 1,600 meters, Kyle Nofziger posted a winning time of 4:43.06. Teammate Hayden Grotelueschen was fourth in 4:59.29.

Triple-jumper Cole Marshall grabbed the other M-S win with a leap of 11.98 meters (39 feet, 3 inches). In the same event, teammate Gabe Labbe was the runner-up (11.75 meters or 38 feet, 5 inches).

Marshall finished fourth in the long jump (5.70 meters or 18 feet, 7 inches).

Pole vaulter Ty Clark was second at 3.36 meters (or 11 feet).

In the 60-meter hurdles, Bulldogs Jaxon Themanson was second (11.16 seconds).

In the shot put, M-S’ Sam Garber ended in fourth (13.00 meters or 42 feet, 6 ½ inches).

The highest-placing Bulldog relay was the 800-meter foursome of Tyler Lewis, Marshall, Valient Walsh and Deangelo Hughey. Their combined time was 1:40.3 and they were fourth.

Besides Nofziger and Grotelueschen, the Bulldogs had three other 1,600-meter runners secure berths in the top 10.

Karsten Waisath was eighth (5:00.68), Grant Smysor was ninth (5:11.41) and Avery Seaman was 10th (5:11.92).

Sprinters Hughey and Lewis placed seventh in their individual races. Hughey was timed in 7.46 in the 60 meters. Lewis covered the 200 meters in 25.10.

Other top field-event placers for M-S were Josh Franklin, sixth in the high jump (1.58 meters or 5 feet, 1 ¾ inches), and Robert Byron, seventh in the shot put (11.50 meters or 37 feet, 7 inches).

M-S returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 26) at the Normal West Invitational in Bloomington at The Shirk Center, on the Illinois Wesleyan University campus.
