Nick Berger and Lyle Burns win Lake of the Wood better-ball tournament

Nick Berger, who won the Lake of the Woods club championship during the summer, continued his stellar golf season during the weekend.

Berger teamed up with Lyle Burns to capture first place in the championship flight of the two-person better-ball tournament at Lake of the Woods.

After one round, they were the leaders in the clubhouse with a 61. They came back with a 68, to finish at 129, and posted a one-shot win over Clark Smith and Lee Smith.

The Smiths had the best round on Sunday (66) to move into contention. They finished at 130.

Placing third was the duo of Dan Patkunas and Kyle Scholes, who teamed up for a 133.

Top honors in the first flight were won by Dan Helbling and James Helbling, who had matching 71s for a 142 composite.

They ended two strokes in front of Ryan Devore and Alfred Coon, who had a 70 in the final round to wind up at 144.

In third place was Jamie Bruning and Jerrod Kile, at 145.

The second flight ended with co-champions.

Jarrod Beasley and Jason Grill recorded a 147 as did Craig Chaney and Ken Myracle. Chaney and Myracle teamed up for a 69 on Sunday to recover from a two-shot deficit.

There was also a tie for third place in the second flight.

Chad Carlson and Jeff Snodsmith shot a combined 148 as did Dan Messamore and Mike Nalewajka.

The third flight wound up with a first-place tie between Sean Widener and Brad Fuller (155) along with Kiel Christianson and Erik Christianson. The Christiansons needed a 72 on the final day to climb back from a three-shot deficit.

In third place was Steve Powers and Gary Gaffney (157).
