Mahomet-Seymour tennis wins IHSA Sectional Championship

Both of the Mahomet-Seymour entries in the doubles competition of the Danville Class 1A IHSA sectional – which concluded on Monday (Oct. 16) – finished with 3-1 records to start the postseason.

The duo of Savannah Amatyleon and Emily Young placed second following a 6-2, 6-2 loss in the finals to Urbana’s Alisa Tangmunarunkit and Luna Morales.

Amatyleon and Young have a 13-5 season record. Tangmunarunkit and Morales are 15-4.

The Bulldog duo of Adella Bird and Holland Martin captured third place, winning their final match against Urbana’s Lorelie Yau and Eisla Madigan, 7-6, 6-0 to improve their season record to 18-1.

Both M-S doubles teams will play in the state tournament, which starts on Thursday (Oct. 19) in suburban Chicago. Buffalo Grove is the host school.

M-S sectional championship team score was 23 points. Runner-up Urbana totaled 18 points. Third-place Danville had 17 points. In all, 10 teams scored points at the Danville Sectional.

Amatyleon and Young will open state tournament play on Thursday (Oct. 19) at Schaumburg High School against Rockford Boylan’s Elizabeth Fitzgerald and Isabelle Grisanzio, both of whom are seniors.

Bird and Martin drew Highland’s Josie Wojcikiewicz and Sophia Fleming (both of whom are juniors) in a first-round match on Thursday at Hoffman Estates High School.

Neither M-S doubles entry was seeded among the top 16.
