MSHS Wrestling and boys’ basketball collect wins, girls’ basketball falls to SJO

Grant Coleman — who hasn’t scored fewer than 17 points in any of his first five games of the season — collected 23 points on Tuesday as the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ basketball team registered a 56-44 Apollo Conference victory at Mount Zion.
He was one of four Bulldogs who made three-point shots.
Teammates who hit beyond the three-point line were Connor Kamphaus, Cole Lener and Jack McHale.
Lener and Kamphaus each finished with seven points.
Lener and Coleman were the top Bulldog rebounders with nine and six, respectively.
Jordan Veldman handed out a team-high four assists.
M-S led 13-10 after one quarter, but the Braves closed to within a 23-21 margin at halftime before the Bulldogs got some breathing room with a 19-12 third-period run.
M-S (4-1) returns to action tonight with a rare Thursday varsity game, at home against Taylorville.
Girls’ basketball
The Bulldogs (3-4) made more free throws than field goals and dropped a 44-30 non-conference decision on Monday at St. Joseph-Ogden High School.
SJ-O is 9-0 for the season.
The Bulldogs hit 10 free throws — six by Kailyn Northrup — and made nine field goals, including three-point shots by Sammie Beyer and Ashley Campbell.
Northrup led the Bulldogs with 10 points. Keida Nichols scored eight points to go with a team-high nine rebounds.
Northrup had five steals and two assists. Teammate Maddy Wade had three rebounds and two assists.
The Bulldogs trailed, 8-7, after one quarter and fell behind by six points at halftime (22-16).
M-S returns to action tonight at Mattoon.
Wrestling
The state-ranked Bulldogs opened their season at home on Tuesday with two dual-meet victories.
For the night, 12 different M-S wrestlers earned at least one win.
M-S topped Centennial 39-32 and handed Chatham Glenwood a 42-28 loss.
Gage Granadino (152 pounds) and Seth Buchanan (285) were the only Bulldogs to win twice by pin.
Other teammates who were 2-0 for the night were Andrew Norman (126) and Chance Decker (138).
M-S’ Daniel Renshaw (195) and Brayden Bone (220) had pins against Centennial.
Others registering falls against Chatham Glenwood were Payton Ragona (106), Decker and Cameron Livingston (145).
Also ending the night with a 1-1 record were Owen Straub (113), Noah Schnepper (120), Peyton Myers (132) and Tyler Kittivanichkulkrai (160).
M-S returns to action tonight at home against ST. Thomas More.
