MSHS Girls’ Soccer and Softball sweep games Saturday

The winning streak continues for Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ soccer squad but the shutout streak to start the season ended after 11 halves.

The Bulldogs (6-0) opened Apollo Conference play on Saturday with a 3-2 conquest at home over Charleston in a match M-S led 2-0 at half and 3-0 before the Trojans scored twice late.

Maddy Wade scored the first goal and Meredith Johnson-Monfort hit the other two. Wade’s goal was assisted by Brooke Benson, who became the 12th Bulldog with either an assist or a goal this season..

Johnson-Monfort’s first goal was assisted by Haley Lester and was her team-best sixth. The final M-S goal was unassisted.

M-S goalkeeper Sarah Hohenstein had three saves.

Saturday’s scoring pattern followed that of the Thursday match.

In a 3-0 triumph over Centennial on Thursday, Wade scored the first goal and Johnson-Monfort hit the other two, one on a penalty kick, as the Bulldogs registered their fifth consecutive shutout.

Wade’s goal was assisted by Nyah Biegler.

Hohenstein had one save.

In JV action, M-S blanked Centennial also by a 3-0 score and Charleston 1-0 to improve to 8-0.

Softball

Six Bulldogs had hits in each game as Mahomet-Seymour swept a softball doubleheader at Lincoln on Saturday.

M-S (3-1) won the opener 4-0 and followed with a 14-10 triumph in Game 2.

Layne Acree, Madison Maring, Aubrie Shore, Madi Scott, Allison Nofziger and Julia McNaught had hits in each game.

The leader for the day was Nofziger, who was 4-for-6.

Scott pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener, walking one and striking out nine.

The game was scoreless until M-S scored once in the fifth. The final three runs were scored in the sixth.

The Bulldogs needed some offensive fireworks to salvage the sweep, falling behind 1-0 in the first inning and trailing 8-5 in the third inning before tallying nine runs in their next at-bat.

Kameryn Brotherton had two doubles in drove in five runs in the nightcap.  Shore helped her own cause with a home run and four RBI in the second game.

She pitched a complete game, yielding nine hits, walking eight and fanning six.

M-S has won three consecutive games and starts Apollo Conference play with back-to-back softball victories.
