MSHS Soccer picks up 12th shutout, Boys’ track places second at Gene Ward Invitational, Baseball wins over Rochester

Dawson Finch and Jordan Veldman each collected three hits and Finch earned the pitching victory on Friday as the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs outscored visiting Rochester, 12-8, in a non-conference baseball contest.

Veldman and Finch were each 3-for-4 at the plate. Teammates Rick Bohlen and Jon Latham had two hits apiece.

Bohlen drove in four runs.

Finch pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out seven. Ben Greenberger closed out the win, pitching 1 2/3 hitless innings.

Greenberger struck out two and walked no one.

M-S is 12-5-1 overall and scheduled to return to action today – weather permitting – at home against Centennial

Girls’ track and field

The Bulldogs scored 42 points and tied for eighth on Friday in the 43rd-annual Urbana Invitational.

Meet champion Springfield Southeast amassed 117 points to win the 17-school event.

M-S won one event and had one runner-up performance.

In the 3,200 meters, Elizabeth Sims was dominant. Her time of 11 minutes, 42.94 seconds provided her a margin of victory of 24.59 seconds.

In the pole vault, Cece Abramson placed second after clearing 10 feet, 6 inches. In the same event, teammate Mara Pletcher took fifth (9-6).

Other Bulldog points in individual events came in the 1,600 and in the two hurdles races.

Sims ended third (5:30.65) and Brisa McGrath was fifth (5:33.56) in the 1,600 meters.

Hurdler Sylvia Byron was a two-event placer. She ran eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.96 seconds) and was ninth in the 300 hurdles (53.96).

Teammate Amaya Francom took sixth in the 300 hurdles (51.74).

Two M-S relays finished among the leaders.

The 3,200-meter foursome of Sims, McGrath, Chloe Allen and Emily Bednar ended fourth in 10:47.77.

The 1,600 unit of Gretchen Scheele, Allen, Bednar and Madi Balbach placed eighth in 4:31.57.

M-S returns to action, weather permitting, on Thursday in the Apollo Conference meet at Taylorville.

Girls’ Soccer

Maddy Wade accounted for five goals and Cayla Koerner participated in four goals on Thursday as Mahomet-Seymour moved a step closer to an Apollo Conference girls’ soccer championship with a 9-0 win at Lincoln.

Wade scored two goals and assisted on three others. Koerner had two goals and two assists.

In all, six Bulldogs hit goals, including Mackenzie Moore, who also scored twice.

Brea Benson, Brooke Benson and Grace Lietz each scored one goal.

Haley Lester had two assists and Brooke Benson had one.

M-S is 17-1 overall and 7-0 in Apollo matches.

The shutout was the team’s 12th.

Through 18 matches, M-S has outscored its opponents 104-6. No opposing team has managed more than one goal against the Bulldogs’ defense.

M-S returns to action today, weather permitting, at Taylorville.

Boys’ track and field

Mahomet-Seymour placed second on Friday in the eight-school Gene Ward Invitational in Champaign.

Meet champion Champaign Central had 136 points to edge the Bulldogs, who totaled 128.

M-S had the individual winner in six events, including C.J. Shoaf, who won two events.

Shoaf claimed victories in the 110-meter hurdles (15.71 seconds) and the high jump (season-best 6 feet, 4 inches). Shoaf also had a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles (41.12 seconds).

Other Bulldog titlists were Mathias Powell in the 3,200 meters (9:33.33), Corey Cebulski in the pole vault (12-6), Hunter Hendershot in the shot put (55-10 ½) and Costen Campion in the discus (131-8).

Two other squad members secured second-place finishes. Jonah Singer was the runner-up in the 800 meters (2:05.86) and Kyle Nofziger was second in the 3,200 meters (10:15.45).

Finishing in third place were Joseph Scheele in the 1,600 meters (5:27.00), Peter Slezak in the 300 hurdles  (42.83) and Morrie Mendenhall in the shot put (48-2 ½).

In three relays and six other individual events, M-S had top-nine placers.

Slezak was fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.62), Colin Balbach was sixth in the 400 meters (55.05), Ryan Whitehouse was sixth in the high jump (5-6), Noah Powell was sixth in the triple jump (36-7), Kaeden Hamilton was seventh in the triple jump (35-6) and Levi Frost was ninth in the 200 meters (27.11).

The 800 relay foursome took fifth (1:39.39), the 400 relay unit was sixth (45.93) and the 1,600 relay was seventh (3:57.10).

M-S is scheduled to return to action, weather permitting, on Thursday in the Apollo Conference meet at Mount Zion.
