MSHS Boys’ Basketball falls to Wheaton Warrenville South, Girls’ Basketball splits two in holiday tournament

MSHS Boys’ basketball

Senior Cory Noe scored a game-high 17 points, but the Bulldogs dropped a 15-point decision to top-seeded Wheaton Warrenville South in quarterfinal action of the State Farm Classic on Thursday.

Noe scored the majority of his points from the free throw line, hitting 9 of 10 attempts in the 49-34 loss at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center.

In all, four Bulldogs reached the scoring column. Noah Benedict scored 10 points, Holt Campion had four and all of Brooks Coetzee’s points came on a three-pointer.

M-S (10-3) trailed 15-11 after one quarter.

The team returns to action at 9:30 a.m. on Friday against Rock Island and could still place as high as fifth with wins in its final two tournament games.

MSHS Girls’ basketball

The Bulldogs split two tournament games on Thursday at Normal Community High School.

After finding points hard to come by in a 58-22 loss to Bloomington, M-S rebounded with a 25-point first quarter in a 62-23 triumph over Chicago North Lawndale.

Amanda Franklin tallied a game-high 18 points against Lawndale. She made all four of her free throw attempts in a game where M-S was 6-for-6 from the line.

Other team leaders in the win were Maddy Wade (10 points), Jessica Franklin (8 points), Erin Lenschow (7 points), Kameryn Brotherton (6 points) and Kailyn Northrup (6 points).

M-S (7-6 record) held Lawndale to six total field goals in the game. The Bulldogs built a 25-8 lead after the first quarter.

In the loss to Bloomington, Lenschow nailed two three-pointers to account for her six points. Amanda Franklin also had six points and Jessica Franklin scored four points.

The Bulldogs trailed 23-8 after one quarter and were limited to seven second-half points.

At 1:30 p.m. Friday, M-S will play in the fifth-place consolation bracket game.
