MSHS Athletics Spring Break Round-Up: Track, Softball, Baseball and Soccer

Mahomet-Seymour sophomore Hunter Hendershot won the shot put in the Class 2A division of the Illinois Top Times high school indoor state championships on Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan  University.

Hendershot’s winning toss was 56 feet, 5 inches. The runner-up, Dunlap’s Austin Klokkenga, had a best toss of 53-9 3/4.

The M-S boys’ team had five other individuals and one relay that placed.

Brandon Bretz was the runner-up in the 400 meters (51.51 seconds).

Distance runners Mathias Powell (9:24.50) and Ryan Hodge (9:34.21) were second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200 meters.

The Bulldogs had three of the top 11 finishers in the 1,600 race.

Riley Fortune (4:30.52) was seventh, Powell (4:33.18) was 10th and Hodge (4:36.02) was 11th.

Pole vaulter Callan Whitehouse (15-0) finished in third place.

The M-S 1600-meter relay unit of Whitehouse, Von Holten, Fortune and Bretz took third in 3:31.63.

Girls’ track

The Bulldogs’ top performer was Jessica Franklin, who was second in the 400 meters (58.51).

Mara Pletcher was seventh in the pole vault (11-6), Brisa McGrath was ninth in the 3,200 meters (11:40.89), Sylvia Byron was 13th in the 60-meter hurdles (10.11) and Keida Nichols was 18th in the 60-meter dash (8.25).

M-S’ 800-meter relay ended 15th in 1:54.71. Relay runners were Stacey Irwin, Destiny Pryor, Byron and Nichols.

Baseball

Brooks Coetzee and Cory Noe teamed up on a one-hitter as the Bulldogs (4-0) shut out Urbana, 13-0, in a five-inning game on Friday at Prairie Park.

Coetzee worked the first three innings and picked up the victory.

Noe closed and struck out five while walking no one in his two-inning stint.

The shutout was the second for the Bulldogs this season.

Austin Biehl led the offensive attack with a double and triple and drove in three runs.

Teammates with two hits and two RBI were Lukas Graham, Kyle Kinney and Dawson Finch.

Six of the Bulldogs’ 15 hits went for extra bases.

Softball

The Bulldogs opened their season on Friday with a 10-8 loss at Herscher. Allison Nofziger drove in three runs for M-S. Teammate Aubrie Shore had three hits and totaled five bases. Another Bulldog, Layne Acree, scored three runs.

Shore suffered the pitching loss. In six innings, she yielded five hits, struck out three and walked seven.

M-S collected nine hits.

Girls’ soccer

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs (4-0) broke through with a goal by Haley Lester, sparking M-S to a 2-0 non-conference win over Metamora on Thursday. Her goal, 15 minutes into the second half, was assisted by Maddy Wade.

Meredith Johnson-Monfort scored the second goal, on an assist from Melissa Singleton.

Through four matches, nine different Bulldogs have scored goals.

Sarah Hohenstein recorded two saves while picking up her fourth shutout.

Metamora is 1-1.

M-S’ junior varsity team (6-0) defeated Metamora 4-0.
