Champaign County Launches Vital Survey for Aging Population Care

In a significant move to address the needs of the aging population, Advocates for Aging Care (AAC) and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) are set to launch a comprehensive survey titled, “Your Voice Matters: A Survey of Older Adults and Family Caregivers in Champaign County.” This initiative, commencing on January 15, aims to deeply understand the requirements and experiences of individuals aged 60 and above, as well as the challenges faced by family caregivers in Champaign County.

The survey is a response to the critical need for enhanced care facilities for the elderly. It will probe into the accessibility, interest, and usage of various services, including rehabilitation, long-term, and nursing home care in the county. This strategic endeavor is not just about gathering data; it’s a step towards shaping a future where adequate care is accessible to all seniors in the community.

This move comes in the wake of a concerning revelation by AAC in May 2023, highlighting a shortfall of 300 nursing home beds in Champaign County, as calculated by the Illinois Department of Public Health. This shortage was further compounded by the closure of three nursing home facilities and the reduction of beds by Clark-Lindsey in the county. The survey is a part of a broader effort that includes a provider survey by CUPHD and a market analysis by an external consultant, aiming for a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape. The full results of these combined efforts are anticipated by this spring.

The collaboration extends beyond AAC and CUPHD, involving a community collaborative that includes local healthcare and social service agencies and representatives from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This multifaceted approach reflects the community’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its senior members.

Residents can access the survey through various channels, including social media platforms managed by CUPHD, Carle Health, OSF HealthCare, and Christie Clinic, the AAC website, and other digital and physical distribution points.

The community’s participation in this survey is crucial. By sharing their experiences and opinions, residents can significantly contribute to shaping a better future for the elderly in Champaign County.
