Markham Prairie brings MSJHS 8th grade basketball season to an end

Jackson Golden hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts and scored 20 points on Saturday (Feb. 10), but the Mahomet-Seymour Junior eighth-grade boys’ basketball team dropped a 56-48 decision to Markham Prairie in an IESA Class 4A state quarterfinal game at Taylorville.

Preston Clark scored 10 points for the Bulldogs and Tristen Adams had nine points. Konner Fisher contributed seven points and Colin Hammerschmidt added two points.

The teams were tied 28-28 at halftime.

M-S nailed 20 of 23 free throw attempts in the quarterfinals.

Clark hit two three-pointers.

The Bulldogs finish the season with a 26-2 overall record.

Markham Prairie (27-1) will play O’Fallon (28-1) in the state championship game on Thursday (Feb.15) at 7:30 p.m.

For the season, five players led – or shared the lead – in scoring for the Bulldogs in at least one game.

Golden was the leader in 20 games, followed by Adams (five games), Clark (two games), Fisher (one game) and Jones (one game).

Individually, M-S produced four 20-point games, all by Golden. He had games of 24, 21, 20 and 20.

Six Bulldogs had games where they scored in double figures. Others besides Golden were Adams (high game, 16), Clark (high game,14), Jones (high game, 12), Camden Beedy (high game, 10) and Fisher (high game, 10).

Golden had a team-best 14.5 scoring average. He was followed by Adams (8.8), Clark (7.0) and Fisher (4.8).

Clark (85.7 percent), Golden (84.1 percent) and Jones (70.6 percent) were the top M-S free throw shooters.

Clark (53), Fisher (26), Beedy (10) and Golden (10) were the team’s top three-point marksmen.

Mahomet-Seymour Junior High Volleyball

Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade volleyball team has a five-match winning streak following a 4-3 start to the season.

The streak started with a 25-10, 25-12 win at home over Tolono Unity on Saturday (Jan. 20).

That was followed by a 22-25, 25-12, 25-22 win at Champaign Jefferson on Thursday (Jan. 25), a 25-5, 26-24 victory at home over Rantoul on Tuesday (Jan. 30), a 25-17, 25-22 triumph at home over Normal Parkside on Thursday (Feb. 1) and a 25-14, 25-13 verdict over Bloomington George Evans on Tuesday (Feb. 8).

The eighth-graders have a 9-3 overall record.

The M-S seventh-grade team has an 8-4 season record following wins over Jefferson (25-19, 25-13), Rantoul (25-18, 25-17) and Parkside (11-25, 25-22, 25-19) before a loss to George Evans (22-25, 25-8, 25-13).

Both M-S teams are back in action on Thursday (Feb. 15) at Champaign St. Matthew.
