Mahomet Family Dentistry Athlete of the Week: the Mahomet-Seymour Girls’ Basketball Team

In a season marked by unexpected challenges, the Mahomet-Seymour High School girls’ basketball team has etched its name into the school’s history books. This week, we’re not just highlighting a single athlete but the entire team as they secured their third consecutive Class 3A regional championship—a first in the school’s history.

A Season of Triumphs and Trials

The Bulldogs capped off their tumultuous season with a decisive 53-40 victory over Decatur MacArthur in the regional championship game. Led by Kylie Waldinger’s 15 points, the team showcased a balanced attack with significant contributions from Selah Campion (13 points, season-high), Reese Gallier (13 points), and others down the lineup. The team’s dominance was evident from the start, leading 31-15 at halftime, and never looking back.

This victory was the culmination of a season filled with highs and lows, including overcoming a challenging start to the season, enduring the resignation of two head coaches within a month, and rallying under interim head coach Chad Benedict to continue their quest for excellence.

Senior Night to Remember

The spotlight shone brightly on Sidney Young during the Senior Night game, where she delivered a career-best performance with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Young, the team’s lone senior and a captain voted by her peers, showcased her leadership and skill, contributing significantly to the team’s 58-27 win over Rantoul.

Key Performances in Regional Play

In a nail-biting come-from-behind win against Danville, Reese Gallier led with 18 points, with Waldinger and Campion also delivering crucial performances. This victory set the stage for their historic regional championship win.

Mahomet-Seymour will face top-seed Quincy Notre Dame in the IHSA 3A Sectional at 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Decatur McArthur.
