Boys and Girls Basketball end State Farm Classic with 2-2 records, Wrestling ‘Red` Schmitt Tourney Results

Both Mahomet-Seymour varsity basketball teams concluded play in the State
Farm Classic on Friday with 2-2 tournament records.

The boys’ team placed sixth in its 16-team Large School bracket.

The girls’ team won the fifth-place consolation bracket title. There were
also 16 teams entered in the girls’ Large School division.

Boys’ basketball
In a morning contest, the Bulldogs dispatched Rock Island 54-44 after more
than doubling the score at halftime.

M-S led at the break, 25-12, at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center.
Cory Noe hit all six of his free throw attempts and scored a game-high 18
points.

Noah Benedict tallied 14 points, Holt Campion had eight and Josh Johnson
ended with six points.

That triumph advanced the Bulldogs (11-4) into the fifth-place game.

M-S led Rockton Hononegah after one quarter, 13-11, but were outscored
19-4 in the second period and never caught up, dropping a 61-36 decision.

In a game played at Normal West High School, Noe scored 11 points, Brooks
Coetzee had 10 and Benedict totaled nine.

An oddity of the game is that neither team missed a free throw. M-S was
6-for-6 at the line and Hononegah was 4-for-4.

Girls’ basketball
M-S broke an 11-11 tie after one quarter with a 16-3 second-quarter spurt
and topped Geneseo 49-37 in a game at Normal Community High School.

Erin Lenschow was the game’s top scorer, with 14 points.

Amanda Franklin scored 13 points, Kailyn Northrup had seven, Cassidi
Collins had six and Jessica Franklin had five.

The Bulldogs, who hit 12 of 19 free throws, end the 2017 portion of their
schedule with an 8-6 overall record.
