Bike Path along IL-47 to become reality

pathThe Village of Mahomet Board of Trustees voted to enter into a local agency agreement the Illinois Department of Transportation Tuesday. The agreement requires the Village to pay 20 percent of a $293,780 grant that will fund a bike path along IL-47 North from Franklin Street to Briar Cliff Subdivision.

The Village hopes to enter into an agreement with the Champaign County Forest Preserve to split the $75,000 commitment.

The Village board approved designs for the path in 2013 when IDOT approached the group about the path, which would extend the current multi-purpose pathway up the north side of the Village when IDOT resurfaces IL-47 from Interstate 74 to U.S. Route 136 in the summer of 2015.

Initial plans indicated the path will run along the east side of  road on the shoulder from Interstate 74 to the Buffalo Trace trail head, and then 9-feet off the road from Buffalo Trace to Briar Cliff.
