Melchi resigns M-S School Board seat

Cheryl Melchi announced her resignation from the Mahomet-Seymour School board on Monday. Melchi has served on the board since 2007.

Melchi occupies a seat that is designated for residents who live outside of Mahomet township.

Melchi’s seat will be open to those who meet the legal qualifications to hold a seat on a board of education.

With a seat vacancy, the district is required to notify the Regional Superintendent within five days. The district will then begin the process of selecting a successor for the remainder of Melchi’s term, which expires in 2019.

Potential candidates should submit resumes to the Mahomet-Seymour Board of Education.

After reviewing the applications, the Board may invite the prospective candidates for personal interviews to be conducted during duly scheduled closed meetings.

The Board shall fill the vacancy by majority vote held at a public meeting within 45 days after the vacancy occurred.

According to a FOIA request that asked for lawyer expenditures during the 2017-18 school year, the district spoke to the district attorney about the Illinois School Code restriction on board member residency, the change of board member restrictions by referendum and information needed for change in board member election requirements.
