Singer places second at Spartan Classic

Jonah Singer’s second-place finish in the 1,600-meter race on Friday (April 29) was the top performance for the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ track and field team at the Spartan Classic, in St. Joseph.

Singer’s time was 4 minutes, 31.32 seconds.

In the same race, Bulldog teammate Kyle Nofziger took seventh in 4:47.59.

Nofziger was fourth in the 3,200 meters (10:12.45) with teammate Karsten Waisath coming in 10th (10:41.98).

The Bulldogs had double placers in two field events.

In the long jump, Gabe Labbe captured fifth (19 feet, 8 inches) and Cole Marshall was eighth (19 feet, 1 inch).

In the pole vault, teammates Thomas Carpenter and Seth Christiansen tied for ninth at 9 feet, 5 inches.

M-S had four other top-10 performers in the varsity division.

Robert Byron was fifth in the discus (142 feet, 3 inches), Marshall was fifth in the triple  jump (40 feet, 3 inches), Blake Dillman was 10th in the 800 meters (2:08.24) and Nolan Nierenhausen was 10th in the 300-meter hurdles (45.85 seconds).

In the freshmen-sophomore 1,600 meters, Ethan Ramirez placed fourth (4:53.82) and in the 100 meters for freshmen-sophomores, Deangelo Hughey was sixth (11.95 seconds).

Three Bulldog relay units secured placements among the top nine.

The 3,200-meter foursome featured Avery Seaman, Taylor Fan, Hayden Grotelueschen and Benjamin Wallace. They stopped the clock in 9:04.49.

Teaming up for an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter relay were Marshall, Erik Christianson, Nick Golden and Tyler Lewis. Their cumulative time was 45.53 seconds.

The 800-meter grouping of Jayvon Irwin, Christianson, Golden and Travis Hoffman finished ninth in 1:36.89.

One freshmen-sophomore relay ran to a third-place finish. The 400-meter clan of Irwin, Hughey, Alex O’Brian and Hoffman was timed in 46.34 seconds.

In the varsity team race, Mount Zion earned team honors with 76 points. M-S ended in a tie for 12th in the 24-school field with 19 points.

Mount Zion and Tuscola tied for first with 22 points in the freshmen-sophomore division. M-S was seventh with 11 points.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (May 5) at 3 p.m. in the Apollo Conference meet, which M-S will host on the Moose Handlin Track.
