By Fred Kroner

Seventh-grader Sophie Park made history at Wolf Creek Country Club, in Pontiac, when she became the first Mahomet-Seymour girls’ golfer to qualify for the IESA state tournament.

Park recorded a 96 (41-55) at the sectional tournament on Wednesday (Sept. 8) and secured one of 14 state berths from the Pontiac site. In a field of 37 participants, Park tied for second place.

She will compete at state on Thursday (Sept. 16) at Metamora Fields.

This is the first year that M-S offered junior high golf. The team had no regular-season meets.

Five other M-S competitors participated in the sectional. They were: eighth-grader Ava Hewitt (17th with a 129), sixth-grader Makenna Peterka (tied for 20th with a 137), sixth-grader Joella Snodsmith (tied for 20th with a 137), seventh-grader Gracyn Shotkoski (25th with a 152) and sixth-grader Katie Hunter (35th with a 175).
