MSHS boys’ and girls’ basketball suffer losses

Both of Mahomet-Seymour’s varsity basketball teams suffered losses in their first games this week.

Boys’ basketball

Playing at home on Tuesday in a non-conference game against Champaign Central (11-7), the Bulldogs (15-6) saw a four-point halftime deficit mushroom into a 16-point deficit after three quarters and the visiting Maroons went on to post a 60-42 decision.

Cory Noe led the Bulldogs with 20 points and six rebounds.

Noah Benedict registered seven points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Brooks Coetzee chipped in with six points. Teammates Holt Campion and Josh Johnson each scored four points. Johnson and Dawson Finch finished with three assists apiece.

M-S held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but trailed at halftime, 23-19.

The boys’ team plays host to Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in a Coaches vs. Cancer game. The Bulldogs are 7-0 in Apollo Conference action.

Girls’ basketball

Amanda Franklin was the lone double-figure scorer (20 points) on Monday as the Bulldogs (12-8) fell short, 51-49, at Mattoon.

M-S trailed at halftime, 25-20, but outscored the Green Wave 29-26 during the final two quarters.

Franklin also totaled six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Jessica Franklin ended with eight points and five rebounds.

Kailyn Northrup scored seven points, Cassidi Collins had six points and Alexa Franklin and Erin Lenschow each added four points.
