MSHS boys’ basketball finishes regular season with win, Velazquez at 3-point shootout

Seniors accounted for 46 points and 13 rebounds Friday night as Mahomet-Seymour ended the regular season with a 67-56 Apollo Conference triumph over Mattoon on Senior Night.

Senior Cory Noe scored a team-high 21 points and had five rebounds as well as five assists. Senior Noah Benedict had 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Senior Holt Campion had six points and two rebounds. Senior Joshua Johnson had four points and a rebound.

Senior Ryan Emmerd scored three points and senior Jack Hubble was scoreless.

Also scoring in double figures for M-S, which led 34-31 at halftime, was sophomore Grant Coleman with 16 points. Coleman hit 7 of 9 shots from the field.

M-S took control with an 18-6 third-quarter spurt.

M-S has a 19-10 season record and will try to secure its fourth successive 20-win season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it plays a Class 3A regional semifinal game at home.

The Bulldogs will take on the winner of the first-round game between Mattoon and Rantoul.

Of the five schools assigned to the M-S Regional, the Bulldogs are the top seed.

Girls’ basketball

Junior Abbie Velazquez hit six shots on Thursday in the sectional finals at Lincoln, but didn’t qualify for state in the Class 3A three-point shooting contest.

She was the lone Bulldog sectional competitor from the four teammates who originally entered the postseason event at the regional.

It took nine makes (out of 15 attempts) in order to advance from sectional to the state.
