Mahomet-Seymour track to be rebuilt

The Mahomet-Seymour School Board approved a $69,997 bid by Midwest Track Buildings to rebuild the existing running track at Mahomet-Seymour High School in June.

Midwest Track Buildings was the only vendor to submit a bid.

District Chief School Business Officer Heather Smith said the IESA and IHSA will not allow the district to host state tournament events because of the condition of the track at this time.

Board member Colleen Schultz said that she was a little concerned about approving the money for the track when the district is in the middle of a community engagement project that should provide a recommendation on the district’s long-term plan with facilities.

Schultz, along with the other five board members in attendance, voted to approve the contract. Jeremy Henrichs was absent from the meeting.

Superintendent Lindsey Hall said that the rebuild would be a short-term fix, one that would likely last five years.

“We don’t know how old where Bulldog Blueprint is gonna go and what kind of recommendation that we’re gonna get,” Hall said. “But if there are athletic facility recommendations in that, it’s going to be a couple of years before that comes to fruition.”

Hall said there is a large crack in the track. The track at Mahomet-Seymour Junior High has a dirt surface.

Smith said the funds for the track rebuild will come from the 2021-22 budget and funds from advertisements that are placed by local businesses.
