Detectives Cindy and H.D. will dig to the bottom of this age-old crime as Mahomet-Seymour Junior High students present Law and Order: Fairy Tale Unit on Friday and Saturday evening.

A parody of the popular TV show, “Law and Order,” this Jonathan Rand play follows Detectives Cindy (Carly Pogue) and H.D. () as they question various characters from popular fairy tales and nursery rhymes.

Did Jack and Jill run away from the crime scene? Was it Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio, the Seven Dwarfs or the Big Bad Wolf?

Although each character has a modern day twist, first-time directors Rhonda Lovin and Miranda Crawford chose this play because the kids could not only have fun with it, but the characters also pushed them to “go over the top” with their acting.

“It’s been a neat transformation seeing them grow,” Lovin said.

Lovin, a seventh grade teacher, and Crawford, a sixth grade teacher, said they enjoyed seeing their students outside the classroom while also meeting new students in other grades.

“In the classroom, you don’t get to see their full personality,” Crawford said. “But then you see them up there on stage, going all out, and their personality comes through.”

Students also designed and produced the set design.

Lovin and Crawford both agreed that it was great to see actors Carly Pogue and Lucas Mills embrace their natural talent. But challenging other students to come out of their shells to give the audience that “big” performance has been a treat for them, also.

Tickets are available at MSJHS before each show at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $6 for adults.
