Golf Outing to raise money for trail shelter

The Mahomet Rotary Club will raise money for the Mahomet Rotary Shelter at Buffalo Trace at its 11th Annual Golf Outing Thursday.

The Champaign County Forest Preserve District plans to begin construction on the shelter, which will be located at the west end of the bike trail at Crowley Road in the near future.

This is a common meeting place for walkers, runners, and bikers, along with the high school and junior high track and cross county teams.

“The club is always looking for opportunities to serve the Mahomet community or the international community,” said Rotary Club Member, Doug Bosworth. “We selected this project because we felt there was a need for a shelter at that end of the bike path.  We discovered the CCFPD had this as a future project because of the needs of users, so it worked out well.  We looked at the project as a win for the community, the park district and the Rotary club.”

While the Rotary Club will continue to raise funds for amenities at the trailhead, the current plans for the shelter are a handicapped accessible picnic table and landscaping.

The Mahomet Rotary Club has been raising funds for the shelter for two years.

The four-person scramble at Lake of the Woods Golf Course will feature an 18-hole tournament starting at 1 p.m. Registration is still open.

Participants will receive a golf bag, balls, lunch, dinner at JT Walker’s, and a chance to win other prizes in several other games, such as closest to the cooler, longest putt or lowest score.

Hole sponsorship is also still available.  Sponsors receive signs at a hole, recognition at the outing and may have a booth at the scramble.

Individual registration is $90 and $360 for a group of four.  For more information contact Dan Walk at 217-586-2000 or drwalk12@walkchiropractic.com.
