Champaign County’s River Bend Forest Preserve Set for Expansion with IDNR Grant Funding

The Champaign County Forest Preserve District (CCFPD) in Mahomet, Illinois, has recently received a significant boost in the form of a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). This funding, sourced from the IDNR’s Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant Program, is earmarked for the expansion of the River Bend Forest Preserve.

River Bend is celebrated for its diverse ecosystem, encompassing upland forests, prairies, wetlands, and a river corridor floodplain. This area, which includes 2.5 miles along the forested Sangamon River, is recognized as a Land and Water Reserve by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, highlighting its ecological significance. The preserve is a popular destination, especially in the summer months, attracting around 500 visitors weekly to its 2.5-mile trail network.

Additionally, River Bend is home to two lakes, with the larger one being the county’s biggest. This lake is particularly notable for its ADA-accessible fishing facilities and boat access. The grant of $1,125,000, which remarkably requires no local matching funds, will enable the Forest Preserves to expand River Bend significantly.

This expansion aligns with the Forest Preserve’s ongoing efforts to conserve river corridors and augment existing preserves, particularly in areas where protected natural spaces are scarce. The land acquisition not only aids in flood mitigation but also helps in preventing sediments and nutrients from contaminating the river. While the development on the newly acquired properties will be minimal to protect wildlife habitats, plans include creating primitive trails and a kayak launch for public use.

The CCFPD aims to bridge the gap between the community and nature. Through the support of the IDNR OSLAD Grant Program, the district will enhance the protection of the valuable natural environment at River Bend for future generations, while simultaneously providing more opportunities for residents to engage with nature.
