One day after it shut out Urbana, 8-0, the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team opened Apollo Conference play on Tuesday (April 4) with a 1-0 victory at Mount Zion.

The schools battled to a scoreless first half.

“The girls’ soccer team secured a hard-fought victory on the road against Mount Zion, with freshman Ella Walk scoring the game-winning goal in an artisanal finish that left the opposition stunned,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “Despite the artistic flair of Walk’s finish, it was the strong defensive play of Kallie Stutsman and Janel Straub that proved to be the backbone of the team’s success.

“Even with 25 mph winds, the ladies only gave up three shots on the night.”

Through the first four matches, the M-S defense has yielded just one goal.

On Monday (April 3), Emma Dallas and Grace Binkley each netted two goals to spark the Bulldogs’ 8-0 non-conference conquest at Urbana.

The Bulldogs led, 5-0, at intermission.

Dallas also delivered a season-high four assists in a match that, Davis said, occurred “on a citrus-scented spring evening, carried by a strong south wind.”

Stutsman played a key role as well.

“Kallie Stutsman, a stalwart at the back for the Bulldogs, showed her versatility by moving to the striker line in the final stages of the match,” Davis said. “Her impact was immediate, as she catalyzed the attack with her pace and vision, providing two assists that helped secure the team’s final goals.

Also putting in goals were Nadia Biegler, Gwen Cambron, Brielle Galvan and Paislee Welge.

Welge and Shaelynn Standifer also contributed an assist.

“It was a testament to her skill and adaptability, and a reminder of the Bulldogs’ depth and versatility.”

M-S (3-0-1) returns to action on Thursday (April 6) at Charleston.
