Winters qualifies for Sectional tournament

Freshman Ainsley Winters was the lone Mahomet-Seymour athlete to qualify for the girls’ Class 1A sectional golf tournament.

In Thursday’s regional at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club, in Champaign, Winters fired a 96 and was one of 10 individuals to move on to the sectional, which will be today.

Among those advancing as individuals (three full teams also qualified), Winters was fourth and was the only ninth-grader. For the season, Winters had the Bulldogs’ best score in all but two meets in which she participated.

In all, 58 players competed at Lincolnshire. Winters’ score was the 15th-best.

As a team, M-S had a 440 team composite and placed sixth in the nine-school field. St. Thomas More (328) was the meet champion.

Other scores for the Bulldogs at the regional tournament were: Hannah Cassel (113), Sylvia Byron (115), Cecilia Abramson (116), Jade Harms (117) and Gabriela Davis (145).

Three seniors participated in their final prep meet: Byron, Cassel and Harms.

Today’s Class 1A sectional will be played at Jacksonville Country Club.
