Village to vote on new 3-year SRO contract, Alfonso to replace Ward

The Village of Mahomet will take a final vote on a 3-year agreement with the Mahomet-Seymour School District to provide a Student Resource Officer during their regular board meeting Tuesday evening.

Mahomet Police Officer Bill Ward has served both entities in this capacity since 2018. Officer John Alfonso will replace Ward in the new agreement. Ward will become the second Sergeant of the Mahomet Police Department.

The SRO will earn $148,862.88 in salary and benefits the first year. The school district pays $111,647.91 of that total cost. Effective July 1, 2022, the SRO will gain a 2.5-percent salary and benefit increase and beginning July 1, 2023, that will increase by another 3-percent.

The board packet to be acted upon on April 27 states that the majority of the SRO’s time will be devoted to the high school.

The SRO’s role within the district will be to:

  • reduce and prevent school-related violence and crime committed by juveniles and young adults
  • establish positive relationships with students and families between the Mahomet Police Department and Mahomet-Seymour School District
  • establish a trusting channel of communication with students, parents and teachers.
  • will serve as a positive role model to instill in students; good moral standards, good judgment, respect for other students and a sincere concern for the school community.
  • promote citizen awareness of the law to enable students to become better informed and effective citizens, while empowering students with the knowledge of law enforcement efforts and obligations regarding enforcement, as well as, consequences for violations of the law.
  • serve as a confidential source of counseling for students and parents/families concerning law-related problems they face as well as providing information on community resources available to them
