Stahl, Griffet advance at IHSA State, Spencer waits, MSHS girls’ basketball falls in Regional Championship

Two of Mahomet-Seymour’s three senior wrestling state qualifiers won first-round decisions on Thursday at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center.

Ben Stahl (220 pounds) and David Griffet (285) each advanced into the quarterfinal round.

Stahl (42-10 season record) stayed in contention thanks to a 3-2 opening-round decision in the Class 2A division of the tournament.

Griffet (44-6) went unscored upon in his first bout at state as a senior, posting a 4-0 decision over an opponent with 33 season wins.

The other Bulldog state competitor, David Spencer (138 pounds), dropped a 9-1 decision and waits to see if the athlete who beat him reaches the semifinals, which would enable Spencer to return to action in the wrestlebacks.

Action in the three-day event continues on Friday.

Girls’ basketball

One of the best Mahomet-Seymour seasons in girls’ basketball in a decade came to an end on Thursday in the championship game of the Charleston Class 3A regional tournament.

The host Trojans doubled the score after the first quarter, 16-8, and maintained that bulge throughout, registering a 72-35 triumph.

M-S closes the season with a 15-12 final record.

Only one Bulldog girls’ basketball team in the past 10 years has won more than 15 games The 2011-12 squad had a 17-13 record.

Amanda Franklin was the top scorer for M-S in the regional finals. She totaled nine points.

Erin Lenschow added eight points. Franklin and Lenschow each hit one three-point shot.

Abby Kyle scored six points and Jessica Franklin had four points for the Bulldogs.
