Sangamon Valley Public Water District takes measures to manage COVID-19

The Sangamon Valley Public Water District’s Board met on March 10, 2020 in a Special Meeting to develop a plan for mitigating and managing the impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) on the district’s staff and the Mahomet community.

The SVPWD serves Mahomet residents that live north of I-74 and east of IL-47 with water and sewer services.

A public notice sent to their customers stated, “The District’s top priority is ensuring continuous safe, clean drinking water and as such, we are taking some precautionary measures to limit contact within our buildings and a plan to ensure staff is safe and we have plans in place to maintain ‘business as usual’ as this virus impacts our community.”

At this time, there is no evidence to support that COVID-19 is transmitted through drinking water.

“Coronavirus (COVID-19) can be disinfected through use of ozone, chlorine and other treatment processes, which we use, in processing your tap water,” the district states.

On the back of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s State of Emergency declaration on March 9, the Sangamon Valley Public Water District is putting several measures in place:

Effective immediately, Sangamon Valley Public Water District is restricting access to the Administrative Buildingfor customers making payments through April 27th, 2020, in order to help reduce the risk of potential exposure to our staff and community members. At this time, the district will remain open during normal business hours, they are simply limiting access into the facilities.

They are asking that all customers use the following payment options at this time:

  • Pay by Mail – P.O. Box 285 Mahomet, IL 61853
  • Pay by Drop Box @ Casey’s
  • Pay by Drop Box outside of the Administrative Building
  • Pay by Phone
  • Pay Online

More information will be communicated to the District’s residents as it becomes available.

“We at SVPWD take our commitment to you, our community, seriously,” the district said. “We will communicate changes as we know them and appreciate your flexibility and willingness to work with us through this process.”

SVWPD customers who are not on the district’s communication list can sign up for email, text and phone alerts at https://www.svpwd.com/ .

Updates will be sent by the district and be available on their website as they happen.
