Registration for CCFPD’s Pedal the Preserves now open

Get ready for an exciting two-day cycling adventure amidst the picturesque landscapes of Champaign County Forest Preserve!

The much-awaited Pedal the Preserves event is set to take place on August 19th and 20th, 2023, offering participants the opportunity to explore the beautiful Kickapoo Rail Trail, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, and more.

Cycling enthusiasts of all levels are invited to join the event and experience the thrill of riding through some of the most stunning natural areas in Champaign County. Whether you prefer a leisurely family ride or a challenging long-distance expedition, Pedal the Preserves has something for everyone.

Event Details and Registration

To take part in this unforgettable cycling event, participants must register online by Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 5:00 PM CT. These rides start and finish at Meier Field in St. Joseph, IL, with plenty of parking available. The event offers various categories with different start times, distances, and fees. Here are the options:

  1. Middle Fork WITH CAMPING (Saturday-Sunday)
    • Start Time: August 19, 8:00 AM
    • Distance: 60 to 65 miles, with optional add-ons
    • Fee: $70
    • Description: This adventure begins with a ride along the Kickapoo Rail Trail and Homer Lake Forest Preserve. Cyclists will then spend the night camping at the scenic Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. The exact route and distance will be determined closer to the event date.
  2. Middle Fork (Saturday Only)
    • Start Time: August 19, 8:00 AM
    • Distance: 60 to 65 miles, with optional add-ons
    • Fee: $50
    • Description: On this single-day journey, participants will explore the Kickapoo Rail Trail, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, and the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. The route and distance for this ride will also be determined later.
  3. Homer Lake (Saturday Only)
    • Start Time: August 19, 8:00 AM
    • Distance: 20 to 25 miles
    • Fee: $35
    • Description: This ride combines the Kickapoo Rail Trail, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, and a visit to Hidden Acres Park. The specific route and distance will be revealed soon.
  4. KRT (Saturday Only)
    • Start Time: August 19, 9:00 AM
    • Distance: Choose your distance, up to 12 miles
    • Fee: $10
    • Description: Perfect for families, this ride takes place entirely on the Kickapoo Rail Trail between St. Joseph and Urbana. Participants have the freedom to choose their desired distance, making it a fun and flexible experience.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Forest Preserve Friends Foundation of Champaign County, supporting the conservation and enhancement of the county’s natural areas.
