MSHS volleyball, tennis and cross country pick up wins

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ tennis team captured its first dual-meet victory of the season on Tuesday, winning every match in a 9-0 decision at Gibson City -Melvin-Sibley.

 In singles play, Amalie Fried didn’t lose a game at No. 5. Both Annie Bao (at No. 1) and Mrinali Kesavadas (No. 4)each dropped one game.

Other Bulldog winners in singles were Lauren Henderson (No. 2), Zoe Doehring (No. 3) and Britta Slupski (No. 6).

Doehring and Henderson teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles.

Kesavadas and Fried were victorious at No. 2 doubles.

Two different M-S players took the court at No. 3 and prevailed, Megan Bostaph and Amy Schuh.

The team plays at Mattoon today.

Volleyball

The Bulldogs (10-7) had monster games from Kayin Garner (33 assists) and Josie Hess (29 digs) on Tuesday in a come-from-behind 26-28, 25-17, 25-17 triumph over visiting Taylorville.

M-S is now 3-1 in Apollo Conference matches.

Savannah Matthews had 15 kills while Ainsley Ranstead had 10 and Lauren Minick had eight.

Garner led with five aces.

At the net, Amber Yeakel had three blocks, Minick had two and Brooklyn Houser had one.

Ashley Wheeler added four assists.

M-S returns to action at home tonight against Normal University High.

Boys’ cross-country

In a rare mid-week triangular meet, M-S took first at Lodge Park, in Monticello, on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs’ score was 25. Monticello (32) was second and St. Joseph-Ogden was third (95).

M-S’ Mathias Powell was the meet winner, with a 3-mile time of 17 minutes, 35 seconds.

Teammates Bryson Keeble and Kyle Nofziger were second and third, respectively, both timed in 17:36.

The Bulldogs’ other top 10 runner was Joseph Scheele, seventh in 17:51.

The team returns to action on Saturday at the Richard Spring Invitational, in Peoria.

Boys’ soccer

Austin Carr became the first Bulldog to score a hat trick this season, but the Bulldogs couldn’t hold a 2-1 halftime lead and finished with a 3-3 draw on Tuesday against visiting Mattoon.

M-S is 4-2-3 overall and 1-0-2 in Apollo Conference play. State-ranked Mattoon (No. 7) is 8-1-1 overall.

Ethan Mansfield and Jacob Peterson had assists for M-S.

The Bulldogs play host to Bloomington on Saturday.

Boys’ golf

M-S placed fifth in the Champaign County Invitational on Monday at Lincolnshire Fields, in Champaign.

The Bulldogs’ four-person score was 406.

Individually, Grant Harvey fired a 94 and tied for 14th in a field of 35 competitors.

Other team leaders were Alek Strube (101), Jackson Glenn (105), Brandon Collins (106), Sawyer Daebelliehn (108) and Rick Bohlen (122).

On Wednesday, M-S placed second in a three-school meet at Danville’s Harrison Park.

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin was first with a 185. M-S had a 207 and Danville ended at 230.

M-S’ Jameson Drinkwalter placed fifth with a 47.

Other team leaders were Jackson White (50), Josh Sullivan (53), Ryan Long (55), Caleb Jared (60) and Drew Tee (64).

M-S plays at the Livingston County Invitational today in Pontiac.

Girls’ golf

M-S finished second to Centennial, 201-241, on Wednesday in a dual meet at the UI Blue course in Savoy.

Football

M-S (1-2) will try to maintain its unbeaten record at home on Friday. The Bulldogs play Taylorville (3-0) at 7 p.m. at Frank Dutton Field.

Taylorville is averaging more than 41 points per game thus far this season.

The Tornadoes are 2-0 in Apollo Conference games. M-S is 1-0 in league play.
