MSHS Soccer and Softball pick up wins, Baseball falls to Rochester

Meredith Johnson-Monfort scored two goals and had an assist as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team won its ninth consecutive match.

The Bulldogs (15-2) shut out Lincoln 5-0 in a home match on Thursday to improve to 7-0 in Apollo Conference action.

Johnson-Monfort scored the first two goals, raising her area-leading total to 31 goals. Erin Lenschow hit the other first-half M-S goal.

Nyah Biegler collected three assists.

The Bulldogs’ second-half goals were by Brooke Benson and Melissa Singleton.

Goalkeeper Sarah Hohenstein had one save while posing her 11th shutout.

For the season, M-S has outscored its opponents 75-10.

In junior varsity action, M-S (13-0-2) topped Lincoln 2-0.

Softball

Kameryn Brotherton was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs on Thursday as the Bulldogs shut out visiting Heritage 11-0.

Layne Acree, Julia McNaught, Allison Nofziger and Ashley Campbell all finished with two hits. Acree scored three runs.

Campbell, McNaught and Carlee Scott hit doubles. Aubrie Shore had a triple.

McNaught and Campbell had two RBI apiece.

Ashley Wheeler pitched the third M-S shutout of the season. In five innings, she yielded seven hits, walked two and struck out one.

On Friday, M-S (9-8) dropped a 5-3 decision on the road to Stanford Olympia.

Shore had two of the Bulldogs’ six hits.

Shore, McNaught and Wheeler all drove in runs.

Shore pitched a complete game, allowing four hits. She walked two and struck out 10.

Baseball

The Bulldogs (8-5) were limited to four singles and lost 11-1 on the road to a Rochester team which has an 18-1 season record.

The Bulldogs’ hits were by Brooks Coetzee, Cory Noe, Charlie Grant and Jonathan Latham.

Dawson Finch pitched the first two innings for M-S and gave up six runs, just one of which was earned.

He suffered the loss.

Girls’ track and field

Jessica Franklin placed among the top three in two events on Friday for M-S, which placed fourth in the 18-school Urbana Invitational.

Franklin won the 300-meter hurdles (45.69 seconds) and was third in the 100 hurdles (15.84).

Brisa McGrath won the 1,600 in 5:21.04.

In the pole vault, Bulldog Mara Pletcher tied for first after clearing 11 feet, 3 inches.

The only M-S relay to place among the top three was the 3,200 foursome.

Urbana won the meet with 109 points. Springfield Southeast was second (83 2/3) and was followed by Bloomington (68) and M-S (66).
