MSHS Indoor Track athletes shine at Apollo and Armory meets

Mahomet-Seymour split up its track and field teams on Saturday, sending individuals to compete at two locations.

Some Bulldogs went to Mount Zion for the Apollo Conference Indoor Meet. Others traveled to the University of Illinois Armory, in Champaign, for the First to Finish Centennial Charger Indoor Invitational.

M-S had multiple placers at both locations.

Boys at UI Armory

Eighteen schools participated in an unscored meet.

Bulldogs Hunter Hendershot (shot put) and C.J. Shoaf (high jump) were individual winners.

Henderson tossed the shot put 56 feet, 9 inches. Shoaf cleared 6-foot-3 in the high jump.

The Bulldogs had placers in three other events, including the 60-meter hurdles where Shoaf was fourth (8.85 seconds).

Pole vaulter Corey Cebulski was third in his specialty (13-0) and sprinter Grant Brown placed eighth in the 60-meter dash (7.46).

M-S was dominant in the 1,600-meter race. Four of the top eight placers were Bulldog athletes.

Teammates Kyle Nofziger (4:50.19), Joseph Scheele (4:57.35) and Jonah Singer (5:07.38) placed second, third and fourth, respectively.

Running eighth was M-S’ Joe Taylor (5:17.84).

In all, the 1,600 runners teamed up for 20 of M-S’ 42 points.

Mount Zion won the meet with 129 points. M-S was sixth.

The other top Bulldog was pole vaulter Clayton Kessler, who took third after clearing 12-8.

In the shot put, Harrison LaCour finished fourth (38-11), and in the high jump, Sam Garber was fifth (4-9).

Nick Meece was sixth in the 800 meters (2:25.99) and Tyler Lewis was eighth in the 400 meters (1:01.28).

The other M-S points were scored by its relay teams.

The 800 foursome was sixth in 1:49.13. The 1,600 relay was eighth in 4:16.04.

Girls at UI Armory

Cece Abramson won the pole vault (11 feet) while teammates Sylvia Byron and LaKeida Nichols were two-event individual placers for M-S in the 10-team non-scored meet.

Nichols placed fourth in the long jump (15-9 1/2) and fifth in the 60 meters (8.11).

Byron was fifth in the triple jump (31-2 1/2) and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (10.29).

Nichols and Byron were two of the runners who helped the Bulldogs’ 800-meter relay to a sixth-place finish. They were joined by Destiny Pryor and Amaya Francom. The foursome was timed in 1:57.11.

Two Bulldogs finished next to each other in the 3,200 meters.

Elizabeth Sims was second in 11:51.53. Brisa McGrath was third in 11:57.36.

Kailey Bell took fourth in the pole vault (9-6) and Pryor was eighth in the long jump (14-7 1/2).

In the 1,600 meters, Olivia Bunting was fifth (5:42.28).

Girls at Apollo Indoor

Ariana Lingard was the Bulldogs’ top individual placer, taking fifth in the 60 meters (8.84).

In the 400 meters, Madi Balbach was sixth (1:09.16) while in the 1,600 meters, Fiona Taylor ran seventh (6:26.39).

Balbach was a two-event placer, nabbing eighth in the high jump (4-5).

In all, M-S totaled 24 points. Fourteen of them came from their relays.

Two Bulldogs’ relays scored twice in the 1,600 relay. One unit was fifth (4:42.92) and another one was seventh (4:49.62).

The 3,200 foursome shared the baton in 1:56.68 for third place. The 800 relay was timed in 2:06.26 and ended in seventh.

Mount Zion won the team crown with 192 points. The Bulldogs ended in sixth.
