MSHS girls’ and boy’ basketball pick up late week wins, Wrestling places ninth

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ basketball team returned to the .500 mark by winning consecutive games to end the week.

The Bulldogs (5-5) upended Rantoul on Thursday in a game on the Eagles’ court, 57-25, and followed that with a Saturday win at home over Apollo Conference foe Lincoln, 57-44.

Makayla Rosenbery had a huge week for M-S, scoring the most points for the team over the two-game period (31).

The two games were her first two this season to score in double figures.

She had 12 points and a team-high six steals at Rantoul.

Kailyn Northrup (15 points) and Keida Nichols (14 points) were the Bulldogs’ top scorers against Rantoul.

Nichols cleared a team-high six rebounds. Northrup had four rebounds and three assists.

Also finishing with three assists was Maddy Wade.

M-S led, 15-6, after one quarter and 35-15 at halftime.

Against Lincoln, Rosenbery nailed four three-point shots — a team-best for the first 10 games — and totaled a season-high 19 points.

Ashley Wheeler also scored a season high (13 points) and Northrup chipped in with 10.

The Bulldogs led, 16-8, after one quarter and 27-16 at halftime.

Wheeler led all players with 13 rebounds.

Nichols handled nine rebounds and also had three assists and three steals.

Northrup garnered eight rebounds.

M-S returns to action with a home game tonight against Centennial.

Boys’ basketball

Grant Coleman reached the 30-point mark for the second time in his past five games, firing in 30 on Saturday as M-S overpowered visiting Dunlap, 62-48.

Coleman, whose season average is 22.4 points per game after eight contests, hit three three-point shots en route to his team-high total. He also had a team-high six rebounds.

Jordan Veldman made a season-high 20 points. The Coleman-Veldman duo accounted for all but 12 of the Bulldogs points.

Dawson Finch had four assists and four rebounds for M-S. Connor Kamphaus also grabbed four rebounds.

The Bulldogs led, 12-5, after one quarter and 25-12 at intermission.

M-S (5-3) returns to action on Tuesday with a home game against Lincoln.

Wrestling

The Bulldogs had six individual placers and ended ninth in the 49th annual Mascoutah Tournament, which ended on Saturday.

In addition to the placers, 132-pound Payton Myers (who won three of five matches) received an award for the fastest pin, 10 seconds. Myers also had a 43-second fall.

The top M-S placer was Seth Buchanan, who extended his winning streak to 11 matches before suffering his first loss in the championship bout at 285. Buchanan was 3-1 in the tournament.

He was decisioned by Alton’s Kyle Hughes, 11-5.

Two Bulldogs placed fourth: Chance Decker (138 pounds) and Dallas Carnell (182 pounds).

Carnell had seven matches during the two-day event and was 5-2, winning each of his bouts by pin. Carnell had three falls in less than a minute, including one in 21 seconds.

Decker was 3-2.

Daniel Renshaw was fifth at 195 pounds, winning three of five bouts. Placing sixth at 152 was Gage Granadino, whose tourney record was 2-3.

At 113 pounds, Owen Straub was 4-3 and took eighth.

Overall, the Bulldogs filled 12 of 14 weight classes.

Others besides Myers, who participated but did not place, were Noah Schnepper (who was 3-2 at 120), Daunte Roberts (who was 2-2 at 170), Boden Freeman (who was 1-2 at 145), Brayden Bone (who was 1-2 at 220) and Payton Ragona (who was 0-2 at 106).

The Bulldogs amassed 140 points.

Meet champion Triad had 190 1/2 points. Runner-up Mattoon — coached by former M-S wrestler Brett Porter — had 176 1/2 points.

A total of 27 teams were in the two-day event.

M-S (6-1) will return to action on Tuesday with home dual meets against Bloomington and Mount Zion.
