Mahomet-Seymour shuts out Lincoln in Class 2A Regional Semifinal

By Fred Kroner

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ soccer team started its postseason journey on Wednesday (May 18) by shutting out Lincoln, 9-0, in a Class 2A regional semifinal match at Bloomington.

All three matches between M-S and Lincoln this spring ended with 9-0 Bulldog wins.

Cayla Koerner was involved with seven of the goals. She scored three times and assisted on four others.

Brea Benson hit one goal and added two assists. Lauren Schnepper collected two assists.

Hitting one goal were Emma Dallas, Kamryn Frost, Elle Hubble, Taylor Remus and Kallie Stutsman.

The other assist belonged to Grace Lietz.

“The Bulldogs avoided a pedestrian start to the postseason by scoring in the first two minutes against Lincoln,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “Koerner was able to find a gap that the mids played into and she was off to goal.

“The Bulldogs played exceptionally well in possession moving the ball around the field all night on the ground.”

Two players who haven’t often been offensive catalysts also had a big night.

“Kallie Stutsman and Taylor Remus had two fantastic finishes for the Bulldogs,” Davis said. “Remus had a gorgeous goal as she struck the ball with one touch into the side netting.

“Since her freshman year, Stutsman has been a stalwart for the Bulldogs as center back. She made a run from the defensive position that found her cutting behind the Railer backline onto a ball from Koerner.

“A highlight of the night – possibly of the year – was in Kallie glowing with an exuberant smile as she jumped in joy at scoring her first career goal for the Bulldogs.”

M-S (18-2) will play Bloomington in the regional championship match on Saturday (May 21). The teams met in the season-opener and the Bulldogs posted one of their 12 shutouts, 7-0.

Davis lauded the play of other unsung heroes against Lincoln.

“Another highlight against Lincoln was in players finding time on the field, making the most of it, and playing pretty possession soccer,” Davis added. “Taylor Dietz, Lauren Nelson and Anna Hawley consistently made great passing lanes together in order to play keep-away from the Railer defense.

“The Bulldogs really took to the turf field and consistently were successful in moving the ball where they wanted on the ground to each other.”
