Illini 360 brings the world to life through photography

Craig Bliss knows that the world is multi-faceted.

“When you look at a standard 2D picture, you only see what is captured, what the photographer wants you to see,” Bliss explained.

Through new technologies, though, Bliss is able to capture the world as it is, then share that experience with anyone, anywhere.

“With 3D photography or 360 photography, you see everything. It’s like you’re reliving the moment,” he said.

Prior to starting his photography business, Illini 360, Bliss had picked up 3D photography as a hobby five years ago.

“I met someone on a vacation trip to the Cayman Islands,” Bills said. “They introduced me to the world of virtual tours within the real estate industry. And that’s how my hobby turned into an actual business.”

At the time, Bliss, who lived in Arizona, connected with real estate agents to capture homes in a way that allowed potential buyers to experience the home, even while on a screen.

Recently, Bliss moved back to his hometown, Mahomet. Using his talents behind the camera, Bliss has connected with schools, park districts, local businesses and realtors to bring a unique experience to local communities.

While expanding the venues he serves, Bliss often hears from people who believe that 3D photography is only used in the real estate market. ‘But, Bliss has seen how using photography is a good experience for the business owner and customer.

“I help them by creating a virtual tour of the interior of the building,” Bliss said. And when I create the tour on the back end and post it online, it enhances the business because people actually feel the space before actually physically visiting.”

Recently, Illini 360 worked with the Mahomet Public Library to update a Google virtual tour of the spaces they offer.

“They were really looking to show off the few spaces they have within the library,” he said. “In particular the kids’ area as well as the fireplace. We were able to really highlight those two areas within the library by creating a virtual tour to kind of show off those spaces.”

Bliss is currently interested in expanding his skill set to help capture the architectural process.

“I really have an interest in walking through construction zones and using virtual tours,” he said. “Architects are able to give a virtual timeline of their progress at different buildings. Right now, I’m working on a project with the Monticello School District, showing off the new renovations and additions they decided over the last year.”

But, 3D images are not just for the commercial sector, Bliss said. He also offers his services to churches, parks, nonprofits and museums as a way to highlight the important work done in those spaces.

His work has even helped remember some of his favorite spots throughout the world.

“When I went to the Cayman Islands, I brought my 360 picture because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to go on vacation there,” he said. “I wanted to be able to take pictures or relive it.

“I was able to do just that, but also create tours of the beaches of different establishments there. And every time I look at those I relive the moment, as if I was there looking at it.”
