Five Bulldogs win events at Mahomet-Seymour meet

Four Mahomet-Seymour seventh-graders and one eighth-grader won individual events in a rain-shortened junior high boys’ track and field meet at home on Thursday (April 20).

The Bulldogs competed against Bloomington, Normal Kingsley and Normal Parkside.

The seventh-grade victors for M-S were: Adam Smigielski (1,600 meters in 5 minutes,15.9 seconds), Grant Morphew (pole vault at 6 feet, 6 inches), Jayvon Tompkins (shot put at 37 feet, 7 inches) and Noah Snyder (high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches).

Eighth-grader Tate Bode was triumphant in the 1,600 meters (5:10.4).

Seventh-graders who finished in the runner-up position were Smigielski (high jump at 4 feet, 7 inches), Jude McWilliams (110-meter hurdles in 19.1 seconds) and Snyder (long jump at 14 feet, 11 ½ inches).

Liam Burwell ran fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:41.0) and McWilliams ended fourth in the long jump (13 feet, 9 inches).

Morphew added a fifth-place finish in the 1,600 meters (5:45.0).

The M-S 800-meter relay foursome of Kiptyn Fan, McWilliams, Jake McCoy and Snyder was timed in 1:53.9 and secured second place.

The Bulldog seventh-graders won team honors with 88 points, edging runner-up Normal Kingsley, which had 80 points.

Besides Bode’s win, the M-S eighth-grade squad had eight individuals place among the top five.

Finishing second were Jonathan Franklin (discus at 96 feet, 4 ½ inches) and Pierce Douglas (long jump at 16 feet, 3 inches).

Brock Evans took third in the pole vault (7 feet). In the same event, teammates Pearce Slocum and Izaiah Brotherton ended fourth and fifth, respectively, after also clearing 7 feet.

Bode came in fourth in the long jump (14 feet, 10 inches) and Cody Moen notched a fourth-place finish in the 1,600 meters (5:26.4).

Placing fifth was Dylan Derickson (long jump at 14 feet, 4 ½ inches).

The M-S eighth-graders placed third with 51 points. Normal Parkside was the winner with 108 points.

In the combined scoring for the seventh- and eighth-grades, the Bulldogs totaled 139 points and were third. Parkside was first with 178 points.

In the annual nine-school Linda Parnell Bulldog Invitational on Thursday (April 13), Tompkins was victorious in both the shot put (38 feet, 6 ½ inches) and the discus (108 feet, 8 inches) in the seventh-grade portion of the meet.

Snyder took top honors in the long jump (15 feet, 2 inches).

Smigielski was second in the 1,600 meters (5:19.7) and Fan captured third in the 100 meters (13.1 seconds).

The 400-meter relay unit featuring seventh-graders Fan, Stephane Mwilambwe, McWilliams and Snyder wound up in second place (54.4 seconds).

Both the M-S seventh- and eighth-grade teams ended fourth in the team standings.

The top finishers for the eighth-graders were Bode (first in the 800 meters in 2:20.6) and Moen (second in the 1,600 meters in 5:18.1).

Two Bulldog teammates placed third: Slocum (pole vault at 6 feet, 6 inches) and Douglas (long jump at 16 feet, 7 ½ inches).

Additionally, two relay groupings from M-S crossed the finish line in third.

The 400-meter unit featured Douglas, Franklin, Derickson and Bryson Tiefenthaler. They were timed in 52.5 seconds.

The 1,600-meter relay included Douglas, Derickson, Moen and Bode. Their cumulative time was 4:11.5.

M-S took fourth in the seventh-grade (61 points) and the eighth-grade competitions (48 points). The Bulldogs combined score of 109 points was also good for fourth place. Normal Kingsley was first with 176 points.

M-S will return to action on Wednesday (April 26) with a sixth-grade meet at Sullivan.
