Extra Copies of Popular Books on Mahomet Library’s New “Lucky Duck Shelf”

How many times has this happened to you?

You hear that a new John Grisham or Danielle Steel book has just been published. You hurry to the library to check it out, only to discover that every copy has already been snapped up.

When you go to the desk to request the book, you find out that you will be tenth on the waiting list. At this rate, the movie based on the book will make it to the theater before you even get a chance to read it.

Well, the Mahomet Public Library staff feels your pain, and they have come up with an idea that might give you a better chance to read popular books before they fall off the bestseller list.

The idea is called the Lucky Duck Shelf, and it works like this:

When funds are available, the library purchases extra copies of new books that are likely to be popular (best-selling fiction, long-awaited sequels, memoirs, etc). These extra copies will not be available for request; they can only be checked out by someone who goes into the library.

The books will be found in a display near the entrance labeled “Lucky Duck Shelf.” The name comes from the fact that you are a ‘lucky duck’ when a copy of a book you are dying to read appears on this shelf, making it unnecessary for you to wait until you get to the front of the request line.

Lucky duck books are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and patrons are limited to two lucky duck books at a time. Lucky duck books also can be checked out for only seven days.

The first books (marked with yellow rubber duck stickers) appeared on the Lucky Duck shelf when the library opened Friday, February 8th. The titles currently on the shelf include the following:

Look Alive Twenty-Five by Janet Evanovich

The Reckoning by John Grisham

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

Becoming by Michelle Obama

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Of Blood and Bone by Nora Roberts

Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks

Turing Point by Danielle Steel

With daytime temperatures dropping to the twenties again, it’s a perfect time to check out a title from the Lucky Duck Shelf and curl up with a great book all weekend.

The library is open 9am to 6pm Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday, and 1pm to 5pm Sunday, and 9am to 8pm Monday through Thursday.
