Day Trips: Crowley Pumpkin Patch has great crop

After a few years with minimal production due to growing conditions, the Crowley Pumpkin Patch is happy to announce an abundant and diverse crop for the 2016 fall season.

With flood conditions, the Crowleys were only able to harvest enough pumpkins for their annual Crowley Pumpkin Glow in 2014 and 2015. Visitors will be able to drive by the 200 to 300 jack-o-latern display located at 435 CR 2500 N in Mahomet this year Oct. 29 through the 31 after dark.

Julie Crowley said “the pumpkins look wonderful! This is the best crop we have had in several years!”

Alongside traditional pumpkins, this year’s crop includes gooseneck gourds and Cinderella pumpkins. A percentage of the money from the Cinderella pumpkins will go to breast cancer research.

The Crowleys, who farmed their land, decided to turn to a pumpkin crop a few years ago after the field, which is located near the Sangamon flooded for three consecutive years. The Crowleys, who love Halloween decided pumpkins would be a sustainable crop because of the later planting season. They also love Halloween and thought pumpkins would be a good way to share the fall season with their family and friends.

With hundreds of pumpkins to carve for the pumpkin glow, the Crowleys open up a carving day to the community each October. Then, they place pumpkins along the road and in the trees that line their property.

The Crowley Pumpkin Patch is open on  Mon. to Thurs. 6-8, closed on Fridays and open Sat. 9-6 and Sunday 9-3.
