Bulldogs win Apollo Conference Indoor Invitational

Buoyed by wins from the 3,200-meter relay and triple-jumper Cole Marshall, the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ track and field team emerged victorious on Saturday (March 12) in the Apollo Conference Indoor Invitational.

M-S scored 89 ½ points to edge runner-up Lincoln (86) and third-place Williamsville (79). Eleven schools participated.

The winning relay featured three seniors and one freshman. The seniors were Jonah Singer, Joseph Scheele and Taylor Fan along with ninth-grader Blake Dillman.

The foursome was timed in 8 minutes, 42.65 seconds. The relay had a 1.75-second margin of victory over Williamsville.

Marshall, a junior, sailed 41 feet, 1 inch to capture top honors in the triple jump. The runner-up was his teammate, Gabe Labbe (39 feet, 3 inches).

Marshall also tied for fourth in the long jump (18 feet, 7 inches). Labbe was sixth at 18 feet, 3 inches.

Deangelo Hughey was the 200-meter runner-up (24.66 seconds) and came in third in the 60 meters (7.56).

Marshall was 10th in the 60 meters (7.69).

Tyler Lewis placed third in the 400 meters (56.84 seconds). Scheele annexed a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters (2:11.24).

Two Bulldogs finished in back-to-back positions in the 3,200 meters. Benjamin Wallace was third (10:45.96) and Hayden Grotelueschen took fourth (10:50.25).

In the 60-meter hurdles, Ian Dobrucki finished 10th (10.51 seconds).

The Bulldogs’ 800-meter relay entry ended in seventh in 1:45.20. Sharing the baton were Jayvon Irwin, Travis Hoffman, Lars Kellner and Dylan Smith. All four runners are either freshmen or sophomores.

In the shot put, Sam Garber wound up in second place (44 feet).

Bulldog pole vaulters Hoffman and Ryken Kirby were sixth and seventh, respectively. Hoffman cleared 9 feet, 4 inches and Kirby topped 8 feet, 5 inches.

In the high jump, Josh Franklin tied for ninth place at 4 feet, 10 inches.

M-S returns to action on Saturday (March 26) at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Meet at Illinois Wesleyan University. The meet is the unofficial state indoor meet.

Mahomet-Seymour Girls’ Track and Field

Mahomet-Seymour had two individual winners and one runner-up on Saturday (March 12) in the Apollo Conference Girls’ Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Senior Ariana Lingard outsprinted all competitors in the 60-meter dash. Her winning time was 8.22 seconds. Her closest pursuer was at 8.40 seconds.

Lingard also added a third-place finish in the 200 meters (28.55 seconds).

Freshman Lauren Burr was triumphant in the long jump (15 feet, 5 inches). The runner-up came in at 15 feet, 1 inch. Burr added a sixth-place finish in the 60 meters (8.64 seconds).

Elizabeth Sims captured second in the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 48.51 seconds). In the same event, Chloe Bundren was fourth (6:00.25).

In the 800 meters, Chloe Allen placed third (2 minutes, 39.40 seconds) and M-S teammate Emma Frazier was seventh (2:52.15).

The Bulldogs had two relays that finished in fifth place.

The 1,600-meter foursome of Cece Abramson, Bundren, Sims and Allen was timed in 4 minutes, 44.34 seconds.

The 3,200 unit of Frazier, Abramson, Gabby Reeves and Kaile Jeffers also ran fifth. Their cumulative time was 12:16.36.

M-S had two top-10 placers in both the high jump and the pole vault.

Abramson captured third in the pole vault (8 feet, 9 inches) and teammate Kelsie Fuoss was fifth (7 feet, 9 inches).

In the high jump, Kara Carney tied for sixth (4 feet, 1 inch) and Bundren was eighth (4 feet).

Claire Johnson snagged a seventh-place finish in the triple jump (24 feet, 6 inches).

The Bulldogs took third in the 11-team invitational.

The meet champion was Mount Zion (164 ½ points), followed by Lincoln (78) and M-S (72 ½ points).

M-S returns to action on Saturday (March 26) at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Meet at Illinois Wesleyan University.
