Bulldogs reach 20-win mark

Both Mahomet-Seymour Junior High boys’ basketball teams reached the 20-win mark on the same night.

The Bulldog eighth-graders overpowered Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, 53-28, on Monday (Jan. 8) while the M-S seventh-graders pulled off a 60-18 victory.

The eighth-graders were led by Tristen Adams (13 points) and Jackson Golden (12 points).

Also reaching the scoring column were Luke Buh (six points), Preston Clark (five points), Konner Fisher (five points), Colin Hammerschmidt (four points), Bradley Jones (four points), Camden Beedy (two points) and Preston Branson (two points).

M-S created a 14-7 lead after one quarter and expanded its margin to 23-10 at halftime.

Meanwhile, the Bulldog seventh-graders scored more than enough points in the opening quarter to beat GCMS, jumping into a 23-3 lead after one period.

M-S was led by A.J. Fenelus (12 points) and Will Martin (season-high 11 points).

Nathan Staber contributed nine points. Jackson Dancer and Owen Henry both notched eight points, including two three-pointers apiece.

Landon Benner scored four points, Stephane Mwilambwe connected on one three-point shot to account for his scoring. Evan Franz and Jaxson Tiefenthaler both hit two points and Oliver Graham converted one free throw attempt.

M-S led, 37-7, at halftime.

Both squads have 20-1 overall records.

The M-S eighth-graders returned from a 14-day layoff on Thursday (Jan. 4) to register a 49-24 victory on the road against Maroa-Forsyth.

Jones led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Adams scored 10 points, Clark contributed nine points and Golden finished with six points.

Other pointmakers for M-S were Fisher (four points), Hammerschmidt (three points), Brennan Bailey (three points) and Wil Selk (two points).

The Bulldogs broke loose in the third quarter to put the game on ice, expanding a 21-14 lead at the break into a 41-16 cushion after three periods.

In its final pre-Christmas game, the M-S eighth-graders  suffered their first loss.

Champaign Edison expanded a 13-12 halftime lead on Thursday (Dec. 21) by outscoring M-S 38-21 in the final two periods of a 51-33 triumph.

Adams led the Bulldogs with 11 points, Fisher hit 10 points and Hammerschmidt added seven points. Jones netted three points and Clark ended with two points.

The M-S seventh-graders also dispatched Maroa-Forsyth, 45-15.

Stabler tossed in a game-high 15 points. Fenelus and Tiefenthaler each added eight points.

Martin scored four points. Making one three-pointer each and finishing with three points were Franz, Caleb Knox and Logan Rehberg. Sammy Perez added a free throw.

The Bulldogs led, 31-9 at halftime, but pushed the lead to 41-15 after three quarters.

On Thursday (Dec. 21), the Bulldog seventh-graders rebounded from a loss in their previous game to subdue visiting Edison, 44-22, on Thursday (Dec. 21).

Stabler led a trio of Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points. Fenelus connected for 14 points and Tiefenthaler tossed in 12 points. Henry notched the team’s other two points.

M-S led,15-2, after one quarter and 23-6 at halftime.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (Jan.11), weather permitting, at home against Champaign Jefferson.
