Bulldogs finish up 2018 with tournament play

Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ basketball team wound up with losses in three of four games at last week’s 40th State Farm Classic held at various Bloomington-Normal  venues.

The lone win was on Thursday, 63-57 over North Chicago at the Shirk Center.

Grant Coleman scored 28 points and Dawson Finch handed out 10 assists in the victory.

M-S carried a 45-43 lead into the final quarter, but outscored North Chicago 18-14 to secure the win.

The Bulldogs nailed 12 of 15 free throws.

Coleman pulled down six rebounds and had three steals. Contributing four rebounds apiece were Cole Lener and Connor Kamphaus.

On Friday, M-S (6-8) suffered two losses at Normal West High School, dropping a 56-34 decision to North Lawndale and a 69-50 setback against Plainfield South.

Against Lawndale, Coleman posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He had all but 11 of the Bulldogs’ rebounds.

Kamphaus had two assists.

Against Plainfield, Coleman scored 22 points, raising his four-game tournament total to 78. Lener totaled eight points to go with nine rebounds and four assists.

Lucas Turner grabbed four rebounds.

M-S returns to action on Saturday at the Taylorville Shootout.

Girls’ basketball

The Bulldogs rebounded from a 62-47 loss on Thursday to Kaneland in the first round of the Decatur Eisenhower Tournament to overpower Springfield Southeast 63-43 on Friday.

Keida Nichols posted a double-double against Southeast with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

She was one of four M-S players to score in double figures. Makayla Rosenbery led the way with 19 points. Kailyn Northrup and Ashley Wheeler each hit 10 points.

Northrup just missed a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and nine assists. Rosenbery, Nichols and Northrup each had four steals.

M-S took control with a 22-7 second-quarter spurt.

Against Kaneland, Northrup tallied a team-high 13 points. She also had six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Nichols chipped in with seven rebounds, five blocks and three assists.

Also on Friday, the Bulldogs were beaten by Champaign Central, 69-44 despite a double-double from Nichols, who totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Northrup added 10 points. Wheeler grabbed seven rebounds. Central led, 20-8, after the first stanza.

On Saturday, M-S (8-9) lost twice in games it led after the first quarter.

Mount Zion expanded a 31-30 lead after three quarters into a 45-38 victory.

Nichols again had a double-double, amassing 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with four steals.

Northrup and Cayla Koerner each cleared five rebounds.

In the seventh-place game, Williamsville rallied from a 14-12 deficit after one frame to beat the Bulldogs, 45-40.

Northrup scored 13 points and Nichols had 12. They each totaled three assists.

Nichols grabbed six rebounds and Nicole Taylor had five.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at Taylorville.

Wrestling

Seth Buchanan (285 pounds) and Wyatt Heimann (170 pounds) each placed fifth in their respective weight classes on Saturday, helping Mahomet-Seymour to a 17th-place finish in the Red Schmitt Invitational at Granite City.

Buchanan (18-6 season record) was 5-3 during the two-day event, winning four matches by pin. Buchanan leads the team in wins and pins (12).

Heimann, making his season debut, was 6-3 with two pins.

One teammate lost in his fifth-place bout. Dallas Carnell (182 pounds) was 4-4 at Granite City. Three of his wins were by fall.

Overall, the Bulldogs had competitors in 11 of 14 weight classes.

— Braeden Heinold was eighth at 113 pounds. His tournament record was 3-5, including a pin and an overtime win;

— Gage Granadino was 10th at 152 pounds. He was 4-3 for the tournament and registered two pins;

— Daniel Renshaw was 11th at 195 pounds. He was 3-3 with one pin;

— Noah Schnepper was 14th at 120 pounds. He was 2-5 during the two-day event;

— Chance Decker was 14th at 138 pounds. He was 3-4 with one pin and one win by technical fall;

— Andrew Norman was 16th at 126 pounds. He was 1-5 at the tournament;

— Peyton Myers was 21st at 132 pounds. He was 2-5 with both wins by pin;

— Daunte Roberts was 21st at 170 pounds. He was 1-5 overall;

— Hayden Nelson was 22nd at 145 pounds. He was 0-6.

The meet champion was Marmion Academy with 405 points. M-S totaled 127 1/2 points.

A total of 26 teams entered the competition.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday at Sterling.
