Bulldog soccer collects two wins/swimming, volleyball and golf updates

Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ soccer team started the week with wins on back-to-back nights.

The Bulldogs (7-2-3) edged Lincoln 3-2 on Monday and matched a season-high for goals scored on Tuesday in a 6-1 triumph over visiting Effingham.

In Apollo Conference matches, M-S is 3-0-2.

Austin Carr and Joah Moore each scored twice against Effingham.

Colten Brunner and Ethan Mansfield had the team’s other goals.

Brunner, Carr, Mansfield and Grant Odle were each credited with assists.

Against Lincoln, Mansfield’s second-half goal snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted M-S to victory.

Kadyn Jones and Moore also scored goals. Carr had one assist.

M-S’ unbeaten junior varsity also won each night, improving its record to 5-0-2.

The soccer team returns to action tonight with a home match against Taylorville.

Girls’ swimming

The Bulldogs finished second in a three-school meet at Kankakee on Monday.

The host school claimed the win with 163 points. M-S had 80 points. Third-place Paxton-Buckley-Loda had 40 points.

Olivia McMurry (200-yard individual medley) and Lydia Schable (100 freestyle) each had runner-up finishes in their events.

McMurry also had a fourth-place effort in the 100 freestyle.

Natalie Heaton had third-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Bella Davenport had a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle and a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle.

Teammate Olivia Ross had fourth-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

Placing among the top four in one individual event were Rebekah Gonzalez (fourth in the 50 freestyle), Grace Larson (fourth in the 100 butterfly) and Anna Shimkus (fourth in the 500 freestyle).

The Bulldogs’ 200 freestyle relay unit of Gonzalez, Schable, Kate Raver and Ross placed second.

Also in the second-place slot was the 400 freestyle relay of McMurry, Heaton, Gonzalez and Larson.

The school’s 200 medley foursome of Larson, Ross, Schable and McMurry finished in fourth.

The Bulldogs will participate in the Peoria Notre Dame Relays on Saturday.

Volleyball

The Bulldogs (10-9) suffered a two-set loss to visiting Effingham on Tuesday.

The Flaming Hearts registered a 25-19, 25-12 win.

Savannah Matthews led M-S with six kills and nine digs.

Kayin Garner had 14 assists.

Garner, Ellie Beach and Josie Hess all landed one service ace. Hess had eight digs.

Amber Yeakel had five kills.

M-S returns to action tonight at Charleston.

Boys’ golf

Despite having three individuals finish among the top five, M-S dropped a narrow 177-182 decision to Centennial on Tuesday at Lake of the Woods.

Brandon Collins (44) placed third, Grant Harvey (45) was fourth and Sawyer Daebelliehn (46) tied for fifth.

Other team scorers were Alek Strube (47), Rick Bohlen (52) and Jackson White (52).

In a Wednesday meet, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley edged the Bulldogs, 168-172. Collins’ 39 and Daebelliehn’s 42 were M-S’ top scores.

In a JV match on Monday, the Bulldogs won at Charleston, 200-207. Sam Mitchaner fired a 48 and C.J. Shoaf had a 49.

The varsity team returns to action on Monday in the Apollo Conference tournament at Effingham.

Girls’ golf

In two matches this week, three different Bulldogs led — or shared the team-lead — in scoring for the Bulldogs.

Sarah Amjad (49) had the team’s low score on Wednesday in a meet against Bloomington Central Catholic and Lincoln at Bloomington’s Highland Park.

Emma Amjad had a 52. Sylvia Byron and Cece Abramson each had 55s. Jade Harms and Emma Yates scored 56s.

BCC (168) won the meet, followed by M-S (211).

In a 200-207 loss to Monticello, Emma Amjad and Yates each posted 48s. Abramson had a 54, Byron had a 57, Sarah Amjad had a 60 and Rachel Burke had a 72.

The team returns to action on Monday in the Apollo Conference tournament at Pana.
