10 Question Friday: Robert DeAtely

I’m a Mahomet resident for nearly 8 years. I have a beautiful wife Anne, four sons, Alex (12), Ben (9), Sam and Josh (5).  I’m a member of the Mahomet Plan and Zoning Commission. And I am a third-generation owner of Barber & DeAtley Inc., a commercial General Contractor, in Urbana, along with my brother Ed.

1) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG LYRIC?
“Your plans are still to prosper
You have not forgotten us
You’re with us in the fire and the flood
You’re faithful forever
Perfect in love
You are sovereign over us
Aaron Keys remake of a Michael W. Smith song, Sovereign Over Us.  A worship leader at Life Community Church introduced me to this song a few years ago.  It reminds me that God’s plans are bigger than any of ours and that He will be with us despite the “crap” that we encounter.

2) DO YOU TAKE THE SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONER BOTTLES FROM HOTELS?
Absolutely.  At least the ones that smell nice and don’t make me sneeze!

3) WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE?
Lately, it is excess noise.  With four young boys, it is rare that it is quiet in our house.

4) WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE KIND OF SANDWICH?
One with the meat piled high.

5) WHAT LIFE LESSON DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN TAKE TO HEART AS AN ADULT?
I hope that my kids understand the importance of integrity.  And with that, the importance of standing up for what is right and what you believe in.

6) IF YOU’RE ON A ROAD TRIP, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO PASS THE TIME?
If my family is with me and they are sleeping, I always turn on talk radio.  As my twins get older I’m excited to play the license plate game.

7) PANCAKES OR WAFFLES?
Waffles.  But only when on vacation.

8) IF YOU COULD GUEST STAR IN ANY TV SHOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHO WOULD YOU PLAY?
I love good drama.  I think I could star on “The Good Fight” on Paramount Plus. Maybe a friend of Diane’s Lockhart’s conservative husband, Kurt McVeigh.

9) IF YOU HAD A PAID YEAR OFF WORK, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
I’d head to Disney World. Then a beach, and finally volunteer more locally.

10) IF YOU COULD COMMISSION ANY ARTIST, DEAD OR ALIVE, TO COMMISSION A PIECE OF WORK FOR YOU, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture inspired me at a young age; does that count?  I got to tour the SAMARA house in West Lafayette, Indiana while going to College at Purdue, and it was amazing how much foresight and client-specific was within the home. So, I guess I’d have him build me a house.
