Seventh-grade basketball wins Bulldog Invitational

The Mahomet-Seymour seventh-grade boys’ basketball team won its own round-robin tournament to start the season, before suffering a loss in their fourth game. 

M-S opened with a 38-36 decision over Mount Zion on Tuesday (Nov. 2), sparked by a team-high 23 points from Paxson O’Malley. Eli Dyer scored nine points. Colton Arbogast and Jesiah Hall-Harpst each added two points.

On Wednesday (Nov. 3), the Bulldogs edged Danville, 41-36. O’Malley led the way with 14 points. Parker Henry hit eight points, Bryson Tiefenthaler tallied seven points, Landon Busch netted five points and Dyer contributed four points. Ben Ohms scored two points and Braylen McDermand added a free throw.

M-S clinched the tourney title on Friday (Nov. 5) with a 39-12 decision over Tolono Unity. Dyer and Tiefenthaler each managed seven points. O’Malley wound up with six points, Arbogast totaled five and Henry chipped in with four points. Scoring two points apiece were Ohms, Busch, Coy Benway, Harpst and Nick Brauer

The winning streak was halted on Monday (Nov. 8) at home in a 38-34 loss to Mattoon.

Tiefenthaler reached double figures with 11 points. Henry was next with eight points and Benway followed with four points. Dyer, Busch and O’Malley each recorded three points. The other two points were scored by McDermand.

M-S (3-1) returns to action on Thursday (Nov. 11) at home against Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade boys’ basketball team also has a 3-1 overall record after winning two of three games in the Bulldog Invitational.

M-S opened with back-to-back wins, defeating Mount Zion 35-27 and Danville, 36-17.

Jackson Bohm nailed a team-high 17 points against Mount Zion. Nolan Franz scored nine points, Landyn Hannah added seven points and Henry McMurry contributed two points.

Against Danville, Bohm tallied nine points, Kyle Popovich hit seven points, Hannah netted six and Franz registered five points.

Other teammates reaching the scoring column were Cole Thrasher with three points, Austo Li with two points, Wade Manuel with two points and Max Young with two points.

The Bulldogs suffered their first loss in the final tournament game, a 40-31 setback against Tolono Unity.

Hannah drilled 13 points. Four teammates chipped in with four points apiece: Bohm, Franz, McMurry and Thrasher. Cade Ashby ended with two points.

M-S rebounded on Monday (Nov. 8), thrashing Mattoon, 42-10.

Hannah led the way with 12 points. Ashby tossed in eight points. Franz had five points while both Bohm and Popovich contributed three points. McMurry, Thrasher and Young finished with two points apiece. Isaiah Benson, Jack Stelle and Parker Wilkins all netted a free throw.
