By Fred Kroner

Three Mahomet-Seymour eighth-graders and three seventh-graders qualified for the IESA Class 2A wrestling state tournament based on their performances on Saturday (March 5) at the Jacksonville Sectional.

The lone M-S sectional champion was seventh-grader Gideon Hayter (75 pounds). Other seventh-graders who advanced to state are Beau Back (second at 105 pounds) and Talon Decker (third at 112 pounds).

The eighth-graders who moved on are Auggie Gaudio (third at 85 pounds), Justus Vrona (second at 95 pounds) and Noah Daniels (third at 215 pounds).

For Gaudio and Vrona, it is their second state meet appearance of the school year. In October, they were members of the state championship boys’ cross-country team.

The two-day wrestling state meet starts at the Northern Illinois Convocation Center, in DeKalb, on Friday (March 11).

Each weight class has 16 qualifiers. The top six will earn medals.
