Bulldogs finish as runner-up at Marty Williams Invitational

Four Mahomet-Seymour wrestlers turned in third-place performances on Saturday (Jan. 13) in the 43rd-annual Marty Williams Invitational at M-S.

The Bulldogs were the runner-up in the team chase. Normal Community was the meet champion (418 ½ points) and M-S was second (360 points).

The top M-S placers were Justus Vrona (3-1 at 126 pounds), DeAndre Hughey (4-1 at 150 pounds), Gage Decker (4-1 at 157 pounds) and Brock VanDeveer (4-1 at 190 pounds). They each ended in third place.

Three other M-S grapplers competed in the third-place bout, but fell short.

Colton McClure was fourth at 120 pounds (3-2 tourney record with three pins), Corey Bell (fourth at 132 pounds with a 2-3 tourney record) and Kaleb Collins (3-2 at 144 pounds with a 3-2 tourney record).

Other top-10 finishers for M-S were Lukas Alstetter (fifth at 106 pounds with a 3-2 tourney record), Talon Decker (seventh at 138 pounds with a 3-2 tourney record), Grant Munds (eighth at 138 pounds with a 2-3 record), Collin Hughes (eighth at 175 pounds with a 2-4 tourney record) and Austin Crull (ninth at 285 pounds with a 1-2 tourney record).

Other Bulldog placers were Kaleb Roberts (10th at 150 pounds), Dominic Connelly (11th at 144 pounds), Adam Dobrucki (13th at 132 pounds), Noah Frank (13th at 215 pounds), Kaleb Spencer (13th at 165 pounds), Izaiah Brotherton (14th at 144 pounds), Liam Noonan (14th at 120 pounds) and Pierce Douglas (15th at 165 pounds).

For the day, both McClure and Gage Decker finished off three opponents apiece with three pins. Teammates with two pins each were Alstetter, Talon Decker, Collins, Hughey, Spencer, Hughes and VanDeveer.

Overall, the Bulldogs put together a 42-51 record for the day with 26 of the wins coming by pin.

The fastest fall by an M-S athlete was claimed by Gage Decker in 23 seconds. Frank also registered a pin in less than a minute (58 seconds).

M-S (7-4) returns to action on Monday (Jan. 15) in the Apollo Conference Duals at M-S.
