The Mahomet-Seymour School District will offer a self-contained special education Math course called “Math Readiness” beginning in the fall of 2020, eliminating a current course, “Action Ed.”

Proposed by Instructor Garrett Risley, the course will be offered to students with an IEP to meet the needs of some of the students who may not be prepared to jump into Algebra II or higher math courses.

Currently, the district also offers “Math Topics” for four years. The addition of “Math Readiness” allows the students to master the “Math Topics” curriculum for two years, then move into “Math Readiness.”

“This course is really focused on their transitional goals that are required as part of their IEP,” Director of Instruction Nicole Rummel said. “ (Risley) has worked with Parkland to get some content and some materials and resources together so that our students will be better prepared to take the placement exam there, hopefully helping them move directly into a credit-bearing class there.”

Rummel also said that “Action Ed.,” has had a steady enrollment decline for many years. One student enrolled in 2019-2020.

Board member Colleen Schultz said that as a member of the Curriculum Committee, she recommended approval of the course.

The board approved the new course unanimously.
