Mahomet-Seymour Tennis tops Urbana

The Bulldogs won four of six singles matches on Wednesday (Oct. 7) to win a rescheduled meet against Urbana at Blair Park, 6-3.

Each of the Bulldogs’ winners were victorious in straight sets.

Morgan Lee won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3. Gwen Tee scored a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Emma Clements prevailed 6-2, 6-0. Gianna Hill was triumphant at No. 5 singles 7-6, 6-3.

Hill has a 4-3 season record in singles. Clements is 3-3.

At No. 6 singles, the Bulldogs’ Savannah Amatyleon dropped a narrow 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 decision.

Clements and Tee were each part of two victories for the day.

Clements teamed up with Amalie Fried for a win at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2. They have a 5-4 season record.

At No. 3 doubles, Tee and Averly Sanborn recorded a 6-3, 7-5 win.

Eight of the Bulldogs’ nine entries at the Apollo Conference meet – which started on Friday (Oct. 2) and ended on Monday (Oct. 5) due to rain delays – won their final match and ended in either third- or fifth-place.

As a team, M-S compiled a 13-10 record at conference and placed fourth in the seven-school field.

Mattoon and Teutopolis tied for first with 19 points. Effingham (14) was third, followed by the Bulldogs (13).

At No. 4 singles, Clements went 2-1 and finished third and after being unseeded.  Her wins were each in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 4-2 (default).

Clements joined Amalie Fried for a third-place finish in doubles. The duo was seeded third and went 2-1. Their wins were by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 7-5.

Both of M-S’ other doubles entries compiled 2-1 records and ended in fifth place.

At the No. 2 position, Lee and Sanborn were unseeded and picked up wins by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-3 scores.

At the No. 3 position, Amatyleon and Molly Fried were unseeded and posted wins by scores of 7-6 (8), 7-6 (4) and 6-2, 6-2.

Four Bulldogs secured fifth-place finishes in singles: Amalie Fried (No. 1), Tee (No. 3), Hill (No. 5) and Sophia Slupski (No. 6). Amalie Fried was 2-1 while Tee, Hill and Slupski were all 1-1 at the conference tournament.

The other M-S singles entry was Lee. She was 0-2, including a loss in the first round to the No. 3 seed 7-5, 6-3.

M-S (3-4 in dual meets) returns to action on Thursday (Oct. 8) against St. Thomas More at the Atkins Tennis Center. The Bulldogs will compete in the Champaign Central Sectional on Friday (Oct. 16).
