Three Bulldogs qualify for Illinois Top Times meet in Bloomington, MSHS soccer and baseball capture wins

Mahomet-Seymour will have three athletes competing in two events on Saturday in the unofficial state indoor track and field meet at Illinois Wesleyan  University’s Shirk Center in Bloomington.

In the boys’ Class 2A division, C.J. Shoaf is a qualifier in both the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles.

In the girls’ Class 2A division, Lakeida Nichols will compete in both the 60- and the 200-meter dashes. Brisa McGrath will be a competitor in the 1,600- and the 3,200-meter runs.

The other girls’ qualifier for the Bulldogs is pole vaulter Cece Abramson.

Nichols enters the meet ranked third in the 60 meters.

M-S will have three other boys’ contestants, including top-ranked Hunter Hendershot in the shot put and second-seeded Mathias Powell in the 3,200 meters.

Pole vaulter Corey Cebulski also met the qualifying height (13 feet).

Shoaf is seeded fifth in the high jump.

The meet is sponsored by the Illinois Prep Top Times.

Girls’ soccer

The unbeaten Bulldogs (3-0) continued their shutout streak on Tuesday in their home-opener, blanking Warrensburg-Latham, 1-0.

Two freshmen accounted for the only goal in the first half.

Brea Benson tallied on an assist from Cayla Koerner.

All three M-S wins have been by shutouts.

Goalkeeper Noelle Bailey registered a season-high six assists.

M-S returns to action today at home against Metamora.

Baseball

Kyle Kinney had four hits and drove in four runs as the Bulldogs opened their season on Monday with a 10-2 win at Danville.

Besides his hitting heroics, the left-hander pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and earned the win. He allowed two hits, while walking four and striking out six.

Zack Chalk pitched the final 2  1/3 innings and also yielded two hits. He struck out three.

Jon Latham was the other M-S player with more than one hit. He was 2-for-3.

The top two batters in the lineup, Jordan Veldman and Ben Greenberger, combined to score five runs, three by Veldman.

M-S (2-0) won its home-opener on Tuesday, dispatching Clinton, 9-3.

Dawson Finch earned the win, striking out nine in 5 1/3 innings. Rick Bohlen worked the final 1 2/3 innings and fanned four.

Kinney led the offense, going 2-for-4, with a solo home run in the first inning to provide M-S with a 1-0 lead. Finch drove in three runs.

Kinney, Nate McFall and Jack McHale each scored two runs.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Urbana.
